CHESTERVILLE – Many tons of muck, hours of shoveling, and loads of sand and concrete later, the Chesterville Center Meeting House is on its way to being wheelchair-accessible and bathroom-equipped.

Working with a $10,000 grant from the Davis Family Foundation, the non-profit organization is pursuing its aim of turning the historic meeting house into a community center for arts, culture and social life for residents of Chesterville.

The Board has used about a third of the grant funds for materials and the installation of a holding tank, but has contributed over 100 hours of labor on the project.

“A grant of this amount is a true blessing,” said Board President Carolyn Drugge, “but without our talented and generous board members it would not be possible to turn that amount into a wheelchair ramp and a privy building.”

Also contributing to the project have been Chesterville residents who have lent their equipment and/or time operating it, or given discounts on materials, making it even more of a community project.

Chesterville Center Union Meeting House, Inc. is a non-profit organization devoted to preserving, maintaining and improving the historic 1851 building for future generations in town. The Chesterville Connections initiative proposes to involve residents of this rural and spread-out town in local festivities and performances of all kinds.

The Board is always looking for ideas about what sorts of activities people would like to conduct or attend, and welcomes input. Please e-mail cynthia.hoeh@gmail.com or call Carolyn Drugge at 778-3767 if you would like to offer ideas or join the Board.
