WASHINGTON, D.C. – Projects in Jay and Kingfield will be getting a boost this year after approximately $500,000 in federal grant funding was approved through the Northern Border Regional Commission.

Maine’s congressional delegation made the announcement this week. In Jay, $250,000 will go toward upgrading town roads and infrastructural improvements relating to the Polycor quarry operation and granite curbing plant.

In Kingfield, $247,000 will fund upgrades to the town’s wastewater pump stations.

Both towns applied for the grant through the Northern Border Regional Commission’s Economic and Infrastructure Development Grant Program. That program, which was created in 2008, awards $4.5 million in federal funding annually to counties in northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine to support “regional infrastructure, support job creation and economic development,” according to the NBRC.

“I am pleased to see the NBRC is making such a strong commitment to Maine’s Second District,” said U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin. “These grants will give our tight-knit communities the resources they need to upgrade and be open for business.”

“These grants are investments in the future of Maine communities,” said U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and U.S. Sen. Angus King in a joint statement. “The Northern Border Regional Commission is an important organization that helps communities in the northeast.”

The $497,000 is part of $1.35 million in grant funding going to Maine. Projects in Old Town, Lincolnville, Presque Isle and Greenville also received funding.
