  1. I don’t feel safe in this community anymore. You’ll get those who get their backs up at comments like mine but, the area has a pall of drugs, violence, miserable living conditions and zero employment opportunity. It’s brewing bad actors and bad deeds. For the low population density here, there’s just too high amount of bad stuff going down! And there’s a culture of hiding it all, hush hush, don’t report so and so it will make trouble, pretend you didn’t see it because they are a relative etc etc

I don’t know a single family around here not riddled with drugs and child abuse. And before readers get their back up about that comment, even under Le Page and Mayhew///DHHS study this past year found Franklin County to have highest rates of child abuse in the state of Maine. The only people taking that seriously seem to be UMF leadership (…bad press is bad for biz if all those nice people from the coast are scared to have their kids come to uni out here) They’ve attempted to host some educational/outreach forums. Here’s the thing, the people who really need to wake up and smell the coffee about the amount of drugs/violence/ crime/ harm to innocent children around here would never go to a sing song upta UMF!

I’m so disappointed and disgusted with the state of things around here. Like many others, I’m moving away which is a difficult undertaking for me and financial challenge, but staying here seems an even worse one!

  2. I moved away. Even in the small community of screeching tires, racingup and down Croswell Road and Philbrick Street in Farmington Falls and nothing was ever done to stop the young people with loud pick ups, etc.

  3. What’s happened to the world, you mean. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, Ca. and here. It is also a hobby reading various online newspapers around the U.S. and every single place is riddled with drugs, child abuse, political corruption and on and on. You are doing the right thing, if you don’t like where you live, move. If you don’t like your job, get a new one. Just don’t whine about it, change it!

  4. In my day, kids pushed a hoop on a stick and loved it! What happened to America?!

  5. I offer the other side of the coin which is that there are drugs and crime everywhere. Without question, we are in a bad place in terms of job opportunities and a housing crash that hasn’t turned around. But as for the people, while we read about these scumbags, let’s not discount all of the incredible young people we are raising, too. There are many articles in the Bulldog about their generosity, dedication, talent. Unfortunately, many will leave for colleges and ultimately jobs outside of the area. But I think raising them here and sending them off on their journey is OK. Some will come back to raise their families, some won’t. Plus there are many wonderful older people here who have started businesses and are making a go of it. Plus all of our seniors, many of whom make a lot of contributions to our communities. I am definitely NOT Pollyanna about this, but hate to be so fatalistic, either. That won’t change anything.
