RANGELEY – Maine State Police have identified the man killed Thursday in an early morning confrontation at a Main Street home as a New York resident. A second man has been released from the hospital and arrested on an unrelated  probation violation, while a third continues to receive treatment at Central Maine Medical Center.

Thursday afternoon, state police identified the deceased man as Michael Bokun, 29 of Manhattan, N.Y. and have notified his relatives of his death, according to information released by spokesperson Stephen McCausland. The State Medical Examiner’s Office has indicated that Bokun died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Another man injured in the incident, which yesterday police said was initially reported as a home invasion, was Hector Munoz, 48 of New York City, N.Y. Munoz was transported to CMMC in Lewiston and treated for a head injury. He was released from the hospital and arrested on a probation violation charge that is unrelated to the Rangeley incident. He is currently being held at the Androscoggin Jail.

The third individual transported to CMMC is a resident of the Main Street residence at which the incident took place at approximately 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning. He remains hospitalized, McCausland said, with non-life threatening injuries. His name is being withheld by police at this time.

Maine State Police had interviewed approximately a dozen individuals as of yesterday afternoon. MSP evidence technicians entered the residence Friday morning as the investigation into the incident continues.

  1. So far, this sounds similar to the Wilton incident, where as the shooter was not identified (and as of this day, to my knowledge, still hasn’t been). I am confused. I am PRO Second Amendment, but shouldn’t the public be made aware when someone has used their right and the result is the death of another, regardless of the circumstances leading up to the pulling of a trigger, i.e. a home invader, unwanted guest, etc . . . ?

  2. Heidi…I don’t see the relevance of posting the name of the person who is protecting themselves in these home invasion situations. If they did something wrong I trust they would be charged, otherwise, you shouldn’t worry about it. What is the reason you need to know, other than just being curious?

  3. Maybe they aren’t releasing the name of the shooter Heidi because he was the one targeted in this incident and now he’s killed the person that targeted him. They were from NYC and could be related to a gang or mob that might want to now get justice for the death of their “member”. Better to leave out the name of the person who lived there.

  4. Whether it was drugs or Pokemon cards…it doesn’t give anyone the right to take another life. If you didn’t know him personally then honestly your opinions really don’t matter. Also, just because they were from New York doesn’t mean they were from the mob or a gang. There’s gang infestation in any state you visit, not necessarily New York. What, he couldn’t be visiting friends… or know people in the town? If it was a home invasion, they aren’t going to tell is the third person identity because if/she was a target they obviously aren’t going to disclose to the perp where they can locate their living victim who probably is my in police custody or supervision.

Michael was a very loving person. He didn’t belong to any gang. He wasn’t perfect because no one is but he is no one that should be judged. He was funny and full of life. He always stuck up for what he believed im as well as for the people he loved. He didn’t deserve to die…espexially the way he did.

  5. Unfortunately we are probably looking at another situation where no one will ever know the truth and the only ones who do know won’t tell unless they can get a plea deal. Another very sad day in Maine.

  6. I think why people are saying New Yorkers coming here for drugs or dealing is because it’s all over the paper and the news 95 percent of the time they are from New York…no one knows what really happened that night except for the ppl that were there and I doubt they will tell the truth of what really was happening because they know they may be charged.until it all does come out all we can do is speculate…and also I think the cops are keeping the name of the shooter a secret is to keep him safe because I’m sure some of those New Yorkers will be coming for him when they know one of their own is dead…this is my opinion only

  7. @Redangel – I’ve had a whole lot of friends for a whole lot of years. All of them call ahead, ring the doorbell, or find a way to let me know when they intend to arrive to visit or stay over. Sorry for you that you lost your Michael, but one has a hard time to assume he was there to deliver a pizza….

  8. Redangel – Please explain the second half of your first sentence as it relates to actual law in the State of Maine. Please explain what this homeowners reaction SHOULD HAVE been as two people were kicking down his door in the middle of the night.

If anyone else cares to do the research, there are arrest records from New York going back several years, things like possession of stolen property, etc. Also the Bokun name pops up frequently when researching a notorious Manhatten gang called the Westies.

  9. Mort – That is one of the names that come up, along with others. One of the arrest records from Manhatten was a Michael Bokun, same age I believe, on a charge of possession of stolen property. No picture. Same person? It’s possible. The Westies are basically the Irish mob on Manhatten’s west side. Is it possible that this Bokun is connected? Maybe. The incident in Rangeley is certainly within their behavior pattern. I’m not saying either that the homeowner was not involved in something illegal, my point is that these guys were not kicking his door down to have a picnic, and to come all the way from New York? It seems like a plan with some structure. It is all conjecture I know, but 2 and 2 does equal 4 once in a while.
