FARMINGTON – On an overcast Memorial Day with light rain falling, veterans marched through town placing wreaths and saluting soldiers who have gone before them during events held on Monday.
State Sen. Tom Saviello of Wilton spoke at the Post 28 American Legion Hall of pausing on this day “for reflection and heartfelt thanks” to honor members of the military that have departed and to remember past wars fought.
“Too often we fail to remember those who gave their lives for us,” he said at the Memorial Day Observance attended by many local veterans, family members and residents. Their sacrifice gives assurance of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, he said.
Saviello noted that 25,000 Americans died fighting the Revolutionary War, 600,000 in the Civil War, 400,000 in World War II and “scores more from the Korean War to today’s war on terror.
“We owe all those who gave their lives for our freedom,” he said.
Wreaths were placed at the World War I memorial, at the Legion hall, at the war memorials in Meetinghouse Park and at the courthouse cemetery where Taps was played. Similar Memorial Day observances were held in Jay and Livermore Falls, and this afternoon in Phillips and Weld.
No, it wasn’t a big parade. And some woman’s comment about wasting her time to come…unnecessary. Isn’t Memorial Day about remembering our veterans, not about being entertained?
And respect for all those who came…thank you.
Yes your are right it is to remember our fallen vets. Not every parade is entertaining, Memorial Day parades are to help you remember.
