FARMINGTON – Students of the month, the school’s undefeated soccer team and the winners of the Veterans of Foreign Wars essay contest were all recognized at a Mt. Blue Middle School assembly Friday.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. has annual essay contests open to students: the Voice of Democracy competition for high school students and the Patriot’s Pen event for grades 6 through 8. The programs are designed to “foster patriotism among today’s youth,” according to the VFW website, foster friendly competition and reward roughly $3 million in scholarship monies.

Last year, more than 120,000 students participated in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest. This year’s theme was “Why I Honor the American Flag.”

This year, three students from MBMS were recognized by Chaplain Clyde Penney and Commander Gordon Webber of the local James A. McKechnie VFW Post 10881. Student Logan Walker took third place in the school-wide competition, Emma Dunn took second place and Issac Wrigley took first place.

Members of the 8th grade girls soccer team were also recognized, along with 8th grade coach Tammy Conlogue as well as last year’s 7th grade girls coach, Richard Kane. The team went undefeated through both grades, incredibly without a single tie. Every girl on the team but one scored at least one goal during that impressive run.

Athletes honored Friday include: Vivian Cormier, Emma Casavant, Elsie Campbell, Kandie Hensley, Callie Towle, Nellie Wotton, Kamryn Joyce, Katelyn Daggett, Aislin Reynolds, Olivia Ryan, Brooklyn Blodgett, Emma Dunn, Madison Allen, Tessa Marcotte, Haley Collins, Rhylea Bott, Caitlin Burke, Meren Zeliger and Taylor Gordon.

Also recognized Friday were the students of the month for November. Those students included Katie Cilley, Dominik Flukey, Luke Brown, Carly Burnell, Trent Beaudoin and Gage DeCarolis.
