FARMINGTON – A teenager complained of head pain after the car she was a passenger in was struck by a pickup truck Saturday afternoon.

Lynn Kerr, 53, of New Sharon, was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier sedan when it was struck from behind by a pick-up truck as she was attempting to make a left turn from Industry Road onto Mosher Hill Road, said Officer Darin Gilbert of the Farmington Police Department.

Terrance Lake, 54, of Industry, was driving a 2002 F-150 Ford pick-up behind Kerr’s sedan when she started to slow to make a left turn. As he started to pass the sedan on the right, the sedan pulled back into the center of the lane and the pick-up collided with the sedan, Gilbert said.

Emergency crews were called at 1 p.m.

In the collision, the sedan’s 14-year-old passenger bumped her head and was checked at the scene by NorthStar EMS ambulance personnel.

State Police Trooper Reid Bond and the Farmington Fire Rescue Department assisted at the scene. Farmington Towing removed the sedan.

  1. Hate when people are so impatient they feel the need to pass on the right shoulder. Very dangerous. Police should write more tickets for this instead of picking on regular folks driving a couple miles over the limit. Just saying.

  2. It’s legal to pass on the right as long as your wheels do not leave the pavement. At least that’s what I was told at a driving dynamics class a few years ago.

  3. FYI, the Maine state law reads:
    6. Passing on the right. An operator may pass a vehicle on the right only under the following conditions:

    A. When the vehicle to be passed is making or about to make a left turn; [1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF).]

    B. On a way with unobstructed pavement not occupied by parked vehicles and of sufficient width for 2 or more lines of traffic in each direction; or [1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF).]

    C. On a way on which traffic is restricted to one direction, when the roadway is free from obstructions and of sufficient width for 2 or more lines of traffic. [1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF).]

Sometimes it is more safe to pass on the right then obstruct the road with cars and keep the flow of traffic moving. It does need to be done safely with appropriate speed. Not to say right or wrong in this situation, but it is legal.

  4. Thanks Joe for the correct info, but I will still wait, has worked for me for almost 30 years.
