FARMINGTON – A student at the University of Maine at Farmington was transported to the Franklin Memorial Hospital with an apparent leg injury Monday afternoon, after his motorcycle struck curbing in a parking lot, sending him down a rocky embankment.

The black Yamaha motorcycle was exiting the UMF overflow parking lot behind the Fitness and Recreation Center at approximately 3:45 p.m. when it struck the curbing and crashed. The operator, Jonathan Ellis, 22 of Farmington, was sent over the curbing and down a slope lined with granite boulders and stones. He suffered an apparent leg injury in the crash, and was transported to the hospital by NorthStar EMS.

The motorcycle was new to Ellis, according to Officer Scott Jennings with UMF Public Safety. The UMF student was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

NorthStar EMS and Farmington Fire Rescue used a backboard to get Ellis out of the rocks and to the roadway, where a gurney and the ambulance waited. Some fire department personnel arrived at the scene from Franklin Printing on the Wilton Road, after a report of smoke drew an emergency response immediately following the motorcycle crash. No fire was detected.

All emergency personnel had cleared the scene near at the fitness center by 4:30 p.m.
