FARMINGTON — A tenacious third quarter defensive spurt by the Mt. Blue girls carried the Cougars to a 49-30 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference basketball win Friday night. Mt. Blue outscored Oxford Hills 22-2 in the quarter.

Addie Brinkman scored a game high 13 points to lead the Cougars (3-1) to the win, including eight in the decisive third quarter. Oxford Hills (3-2) Alex Rowe led the Vikings with eight points.

Mt. Blue tried several combinations of defenses in the first half which Oxford Hills handled with ease. Mt. Blue owned a slim 19-16 lead at the break. Halftime gave the Mt. Blue a chance to regroup and when they returned for the second half full court pressure was the key.

Mackenzie Conlogue (eight points) hit a three-point shot from the right side to open the second half, Oxford Hills responded when Rowe hit one of two free throws to narrow Mt. Blue’s lead to 22-17 at 7:11. The Vikings would not score another point for six minutes and 28 seconds as the Cougars dove on the floor, covered passing lanes and double teamed their way to the win.

Jaycee Jenckes scored on an offensive rebound, Brinkman hit a pair from the free throw line and Gabby Foy (12 points) added two of her own from the charity stripe to begin a 17-0 run. Foy’s three from the left side, with 2:20 left in the quarter capped the flurry of points, leaving Mt. Blue owning a 39-17 lead.

Brinkman proved effective on the inside, registering a couple of blocks and two nice power moves in the paint.

Mt. Blue finished the game hitting 13 of 26 from the free throw line, including Foy knocking down six of six. Oxford Hills managed to convert 10 of 17.

Mt. Blue girls will be back on their home court, Thursday after the Christmas break hosting a good Lawrence (3-2) team.
