New Sharon man awarded National Weather Service recognition

NEW SHARON – Recently, the National Weather Service office in Gray, presented Maynard A. Webster with two awards: the 40-year Length of Service Award and a John Campanius Holm Award.

According to the award, “Mr. Webster has faithfully taken weather observations every day at 7 a.m. for 40 years as a cooperative weather observer. The observations play a critical role in contributing to our knowledge and understanding of the local, national, and global climate.

“Mr. Maynard Webster’s dedication and quality observations of measuring temperature, rainfall and snow depth from New Sharon, Maine, earned him a John Campanius Holm Award. The Holm Award is only given out up to 25 Cooperative Weather Observers a year, and there are around 11,000 Cooperative Weather Observers across the United States.”

The citation on the award reads: “For extraordinary service in reporting detailed observations of temperature, precipitation and snow depth for 40 years from New Sharon, Maine. The National Weather Service regards your observations as a vital resource for water supply forecasts of the Kennebec River Basin.”
