Steve and Jill Smith of Phillips, are this year’s Old Home Days honored couple.

PHILLIPS – With, “200 Years and Still Hog Wild,” as the 55th Annual Phillips Old Home Days theme, things are bound to turn out, well, wild with a lot of fun thrown in.

Each year, the Phillips Chamber of Commerce pulls out all stops for nine days of events that begins today with the annual photo contest. The next week will feature various tournaments, from volleyball to cribbage to lumbering; quilt and flower shows; a vintage cruise night, talent show and road race; lots of entertainment, food and much more.

The 55th Annual Old Home Days Parade begins 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17. Parade entries need to be in the lineup at 4 p.m. at North Franklin Park. Call 639-2817 for pre-registration. The parade is sponsored in part by The Strong/Phillips Lions Club.

Saturday night at dusk, a big fireworks show will be launched from North Franklin Park to celebrate this town’s 200th birthday. Voters at the annual town meeting in June threw in an extra $2,000 for a bigger show. The rain date is set for Sunday at dusk.

This year’s honored couple is Steve and Jill Smith for their more than 40 years of community service in Phillips. As major organizers for the Old Home Days over the years, the Smiths are particularly well known for their bean hole beans and chicken barbecue served up during Old Home Days, along with the horse pulls at North Franklin Park.

Phillips native and Vietnam War veteran, Steve Smith works as a woodsman after years at Central Maine Power and Maine Department of Transportation. Jill Smith is a nurse at Franklin Memorial Hospital after working for more than 25 years at Lauri Enterprises in Avon. The couple has two sons, Steven, 41, and Joe, 38, and four grandchildren: Nick 15, Gage 10, Anthony 6, and Trace, 2.

On receiving the honor, the couple were noted as being “an asset to this community, always willing to help or lend a hand where needed.”

  1. It is a great choice picking Steve and Jill. They have been such a great community asset over the years. I have seen these great people time and time again pull everything together. I have a special place for these people as their son Joe is my best friend and Steven is a friend and a big brother. The Smiths have been a great asset to the town and I encourage people this week to thank them for all their hard work.
