PHILLIPS – The 58th Phillips Old Home Days kicks off this weekend and continues for a full week  of fun activities for all ages, especially since this year’s parade theme is “Disney Comes to Phillips.”

The annual summer event, sponsored by the Phillips Chamber of Commerce, features all kinds of events including the big parade set for Friday, Aug. 21, with a 5 p.m. start from North Franklin Park. The events begin on Saturday, Aug. 16 and run through the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 23.

As is the tradition, a couple is chosen to be honored and this year it is Mike and Ginny Auger. They are both known to pitch in with whatever needs doing in town. The Old Home Days events rely on its faithful volunteers and the Augers have never hesitated when it comes to helping out.

“They do everything for the town,” said event organizer Tami Bredeau, who also serves as the Chamber’s secretary. “They’re great.”

The method for choosing the Old Home Days’ theme was new this year, Bredeau noted. Suggestions for this year’s theme at a cost of $1 per idea were gathered in buckets around town. By May’s idea deadline, 38 people had answered the suggestion bucket’s question of “What would you like the theme to be?”

Once all the responses were gathered, Bredeau said the chamber board voted on their favorite of the suggested themes. Carol Rogers’ ode to all things Disney and Phillips won as this year’s theme. For her efforts, half the bucket total of $19 went to the idea woman and the rest as a fund raiser for the event.

New this year will be a Saturday night concert featuring the band “To Be Determined” 6 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the Phillips Area Community Center. Some 30 years ago, Old Home Days featured a Saturday night ball where everyone came dressed in their best formal wear and danced the night away, Bredeau said. Last year an effort to revive that idea proved not a popular one so organizers decided to go with a more modern live band approach.

“We wanted something for the adults,” she said, noting the younger crowd has a street dance on Friday, Aug. 21, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Main Street each year.

Also new is that the old jail is now on display at the Phillips Historical Society’s home in the center of town. According to Dick Matthews, Dan Jalbert, John Stinchfield, and Larry Pinkham jacked up the old jail out on the highway and moved to its new home at the Historical House last month where plans to preserve it are in the works.

The busy historical society members are holding an open house at the Phillips Historical Society with an Arts & Craft Fair hosting local artists and merchants, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22; and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. You’ll probably want to catch the flower show the society puts on each year as well. Viewing starts Friday evening.
