FARMINGTON – The Farmington Police Department wants to remind residents not to give out any personal information to callers after receiving two phone scam attempt complaints.

Police Chief Jack Peck said two different people called the department on Monday to report attempts to scam them into giving out their personal information by saying it was the Internal Revenue Service calling.  People were told they needed to give their personal information in order to process their reimbursement check.

“Both people were smart enough not to give out their personal information,” Peck said.

Residents should be aware of the local scam attempts and be reminded to never give out their personal information, Peck said, such as credit card or Social Security numbers, to callers.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, scammers will say anything to cheat people out of their money and unfortunately succeed all too often. The best strategy is to hang up immediately on fraudulent telemarketing.
