NEW SHARON – On a crisp, clear blue Saturday, families gathered on Crowell Pond for a little ice fishing and to show support for their school.
A delighted Katee Lord, 5, of Chesterville, lit up when her dad, Rod Lord pulled a pickerel from the hole in the ice.
“It’s pretty small, should we put it back,” Lord asked his daughter.
“No,” came the emphatic answer. “I want to keep it,” Katee Lord said. Holding it up, she eyed the glistening fish then got up to run across the pond to her sister, Abby to show off her catch. By noon, the girls had caught six pickerel.
Held for the seventh year, the annual fishing derby is Cape Cod Hill School’s biggest fund raiser of the year, said Principal Darlene Paine. Wearing a mad bomber hat, she was kept busy behind a long table signing up the more than 100 participating anglers. Food and donated prizes were also part of the fun.
“It’s a great turnout and the weather’s nice,” Paine said smiling.
Held through the day on Saturday, the benefit fishing derby raises funding to support additional learning opportunities at the elementary school.
