FARMINGTON – Residents have a chance to see a selection of art quilts touring the state in the downtown over the next few days, as a statewide quilting group displays its latest collection in Devaney, Doak & Garrett Booksellers.

Art Quilts Maine, a contemporary quilt art guild, has hung 18 quilts in the bookstore for the next few days, as part of a statewide tour. The art quilts, designed strictly for display rather than everyday use, are all designed around the theme “a postcard from away” and mark the second year of AQM’s themed challenges. Last year’s quilts were inspired by artists’ favorite children books.

Art quilters form a specialized branch of the state’s numerous quilting groups, which represent more than 2,000 quilters organized into chapters by the Pine Tree Quilters Guild.  Art quilts, as display pieces that do not see regular use, can be made from a wider range of materials, such as silks, sheer fabrics or velvet.

“When I say I’m an art quilter, they’re like ‘wha?'” AQM member Sally Rowe said, as she and fellow member Julie Weaver hung quilts in DDG Booksellers Wednesday afternoon.

The greater range of materials allow for a greater range of designs, and fairly creative interpretations of “a postcard from away.” Example ranged from actual postcards to seascapes and hilltop vistas to memories of vacations. The collection has appeared in Portland and Skowhegan, and will travel to Saco and Waterville after it leaves Farmington.

Art Quilts Maine includes quilters from across the state. They meet in Augusta.
