FARMINGTON – Front Street is taking on a distinctly Halloween feel today, as the fourth annual Pumpkin Festival brought art, food and lots of fun to Farmington. The festival got off to an exciting start with an obstacle race that challenged many participants to complete the circuit which included crawling on your belly under a rope lattice, climbing up and over a tall ladder wall, carrying a big pumpkin across a narrow balance beam and more.

Families crowded around the tables and booths set up all along Front Street, with a hay bale maze drawing significant interest from children. Horse-drawn wagon rides brought participants from Union Rental to Divine Inspirations, where scarecrows and faces were being painted. Meanwhile, cookies were being decorated beside Norton Optometry while scavenger hunters ran through the crowds.

Events run until 3 p.m., including family songs by Professor Smartypants, a pie eating contest at Depot Laundry at noon, the Flying High Frisbee Dogs Show near Western Mountain Financial Services from noon to 2 p.m. and the Frogtown Mountain Puppet Show’s “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow” at Narrow Gauge Cinemas from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

A $5 festival pass pays for most of the fun, including a showing of either Pan or Hotel Transylvania 2 on Saturday or Sunday. Pan will run at noon, 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., while Hotel Transylvania 2 runs at 12:15 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 4:45 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. at Narrow Gauge Cinemas.

A number of local businesses will be holding sales and specials today, including McDonald’s, Giffords, Divine Inspirations, Front Street Tavern, Farmer’s Union, The Stone Hearth Cafe, The Snack Shack, Thai Smile & Sushi, The Chickadee’s Nest, Up Front & Pleasant Gourmet, Front Street Merchantile and Narrow Gauge Cinemas.
