Rangeley Lakes Regional School is ready to open its doors on Tuesday to all K-12 students.

RANGELEY – When RSU 78’s K-12 students start the school year on Tuesday, they’ll notice the changes in some classroom locations, a new soccer field under construction and a new portable modular classroom replacement for the old one.

Sight unseen is the start-up work that’s gone towards bringing the school’s academics in line with the state mandated standards-based curriculum.

Superintendent Susan Pratt said the students entering the 9th grade this school year will be the first to graduate from Rangeley Lakes Regional School with the new proficiency-based education.

RSU 78 families live in the towns of Dallas Plantation, Magalloway Plantation, Rangeley, Rangeley Plantation and Sandy River Plantation.

While the new and larger soccer field is being rebuilt, home games will be played off-campus at the town park. A new portable classroom has been installed to replace the old, deteriorated model. Some of the classes have been moved to other rooms so that the grade levels are more sequential. There is now an elementary level wing, a middle school wing and a high school wing.

“They were mixed around before,” Pratt said of the classroom locations. Now, the range in grade level are close in proximity.

Overall, “the building has been cleaned and spiffed up,” Pratt said.

While the building is ready for students, so are the teachers. This year there will be a special emphasis on literacy and mathematics at the elementary level. An early intervention program in both those disciplines is in place to help all students keep up with their classroom work.

There will be a few new ed techs, but otherwise the faculty will be all familiar faces to students. “Consistency is important,” Pratt said.

A mandatory iPad training session is scheduled for the parents or guardians of 6th through 12th grade students on Thursday, Sept. 4. Two sessions, will be held, one at 5 p.m. followed by a second session at 6 p.m. The Maine Learning Technology Initiative workshop is required before students can take the devices home with them.

Kindergarten students will all get iPads, but they are kept at school.

It feels like it’s going to be a great year,” Pratt said, adding, “I’m very excited.”
