Update: Man identified from Appalachian Trail death

Aug. 15 Update: State Police said the man whose body was found on the Appalachian Train in northern Franklin County on Friday is 51-year-old Michael Guerette of Cherry Grove, NY. Autopsy results are pending from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, which conducted an autopsy on his body this morning.

State Police say they are investigating the death as “unexplained” and will await the Medical Examiner’s findings. Guerette had been hiking a portion of the AT in Maine for the past two weeks and was hiking alone.
His body was found by fellow hikers along the trail near Carry Place Township on Friday morning.

The body of a hiker has been recovered this afternoon from the Appalachian Trail in northern Franklin County and his body will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, although initial reports are that he fell and hit his head, according to Edie Smith, spokeswoman for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

He is reported to be from New York; although his identity is not being released until after notification of next of kin.

The body was discovered by hikers on the AT; the Maine State Police is the lead agency in the recovery, assisted by four Maine Game Wardens. The location was one mile up the A.T. from the Long Falls Dam Road in Carrying Place Township.

  1. Such a shame. And such a sad story. Lesson #1…. always hike in pairs, never alone. Who knows it might save your life.
