KINGFIELD – A juvenile pedestrian was reportedly struck by a vehicle on Route 142 on the evening of Wednesday, May 15, according to a report from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Franklin County Sergeant Nathan Bean, Deputy Andrew Morgan and Detective Kenneth Charles as well as the Kingfield Fire Department responded to a call at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday evening. The caller reported that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and the vehicle had left the scene.

Driven by 31-year-old Isaac Moody, the black 2008 Scion returned to the scene shortly after. Moody was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of personal injury accident and aggravated driving to endanger Wednesday night according to the report.

It was determined that the vehicle crossed over the centerline, striking the youth who was skateboarding in the westbound lane. The juvenile was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar Ambulance with serious injuries. The case is still under investigation.

  1. One has to wonder why Mr Moody left the scene and thankfully returned?? Luckily the juvenile was not killed!!

  2. One has to wonder why someone was skateboarding on a highway at dusk….

  3. While driving up towards the Mt. Blue High School a few weeks ago a skateboarder was ripping downhill, weaving from the center of the road lane to lane. Of course I slowed down and when he passed he gave me a look that I was ruining his run.
Then just before getting to Seamon rd there was a young man walking in my lane about half way in, again I slowed way down, and thinking he would yield over to the extra wide shoulder but he just gave me a dirty look and never moved out of the road.
When traveling in a road with less than a car, ( bike, on foot, etc ) it is always safest to assume that you can not be seen.

  4. Just curious…. why was there someone skateboarding around 8:00-8:30 at night? I mean with no proper reflective articles of clothing don’t you think it may be hard for someone to be seen? Was he wearing a helmet or proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)? Maybe we should not always blame the driver… the is some fault to the driver but remember it takes 2 to do the Tango.

  5. If the reported details are correct : the car crossed center line and struck the skateboarder, and then left the scene. Came back to this scene shortly after. This, if true, does indicate culpability on the part of the driver. We can extend some mitigating circumstance as to why he left and then came back, such as : didn’t know if they hit someone/ had to turn around and come back to be sure. I’m not familiar with that stretch of road but, many stretches of road around here offer little to no place for a car to pull off/ stop/ get out. You often have to cont. a bit to find a spot with enough shoulder to safely stop and exit your vehicle without, you know, having your car blocking half the lane of blind curve. So—the driver may have done something wrong, they also may have some explanations that are reasonable/mitigating for some of it.

On another note: we have a problem with our roads not being well suited/ safe for multi use!!! Most have a shoulder so narrow you need to be a Olympic balance beam gymnast to walk/ bike/ skate etc. along the this strip of shoulder with a several foot ditch beside you! Years ago we used to ride or drive horses on these roads…no way would I consider it now/ not worth the dangers. There is simply no way to get out of a lane into safety with enough space on the shoulders.

Our roads do not have wide enough shoulders to safely encourage walkers and multi-use IMHO. I don’t know that there is anything to be done except consider that when roads are resurfaced/ planned in the future. People are also driving at very high speeds on these roads unchecked. I mean—I know I am not the only resident who thinks we could raise a lot of money in this county simply by staking out these roads and handing out more speeding tickets! 45mph zone is in practice a 65mph zone….right past your mailbox, you walking, your tractor as you skip down to your next field. I don’t understand why the local towns aren’t doing more speeding stake out’s on a variety of roads— christ, you could pay a couple more officers salaries with the proceeds given the amount of speeders and #miles over the limit they are going!!!

I’ve taken to wearing a high viz orange +reflective vest anytime I’m on foot or bike. I’ve gotten some sneering looks like it looks silly but hey—proves my point: THEY SAW ME

  6. I ride my bike (legally) on the roads all over Franklin County. It is the responsibility of drivers in their vehicles to be aware of their surroundings and be in control of their vehicles. It is also the responsibility of the driver to stop if they hit an unknown object.
I would suggest that anyone who is questioning the behavior of this 16-year-old look a little closer at the situation. He was ultimately not breaking any laws. The driver, however, crossed over into the other lane was not aware enough to know what he had hit and left the scene of an accident. Even if the kid was wearing reflective clothing the driver would likely not have noticed.
The 16-year old is the victim of a crime. It will take two years for this kid to recover. I am sure in that time he will be thinking about any way he was at fault.

Hmmmm the driver was absolutely at fault.

  7. To *Hmmmm* it may concern :

Have you seen the photo’s released of the car that hit the skateboarder? The hood and roof are completely caved in/dented in form of the kids body and the windshield totally shattered. The guy did not just drive by and tap him.

“Hmmm” way to go with the passive aggressive comments. Guilty conscience much?

  8. I am trying to remember the picture of the car….Am I correct in thinking the damage was all on the passenger side of the car? Just trying to figure out how Mr Moody was in the other lane and managed to hit the teen on the passenger side of the car? Something just doesn’t add up?? Either way, Mr Moody should have been in his lane!!

  9. Here is an article with photos and interview given by residents on the scene
    https://www.sunjournal.com/2019/05/20/skateboarder-struck-by-car-out-of-icu-fundraising-efforts-ongoing/
(they state they were given permission by the family to talk with sun journal about what they heard and saw). The damage is on the passenger side. I was stunned by the amount of damage. It’s truly amazing the boy survived. I also suspect his survival was greatly impacted by people who ran out of their homes immediately to provide aid an call 911. I can see how the damage could end up on the passenger side with the car veering into wrong lane 1.) depending on point of impact, could throw the body onto hood/windscreen at velocity/physics that made it land more towards the passenger side 2.) the boy stated he tried to jump out of the way as car came at him-if the car was headed off towards the wrong side of the road he may have tried to dodge it by jumping out of way towards lane car had veered out of, hence caught by passenger side.

Bad situation. Lucky this kid was not killed.

  10. Wow. You know, reading the hate on a 16yo kid skate boarding at 8pm (it’s not dark out at 8pm anymore duh???) Is it any wonder Franklin County is losing residents, losing youth, losing jobs and industry??? Why would anyone want to stay in a county with such toxic attitudes…

Franklin County:: A great place to buy and distribute drugs, but hell no, don’t you dare skateboard on the correct side of the road at 8pm!

    Whatever…

  11. I lived in a community once and the powers to be decided to ban skateboarding because it leads to heroin addiction, no jive.
Let’s be safe out there kids.
