FARMINGTON – A report of smoke in the University of Maine at Farmington’s Education Center drew dozens of firefighters and curious students to High Street Tuesday evening.

Firefighters from a number of towns were at Mt. Blue Campus for a traffic management course when the call came in at approximately 7:30 p.m., according to Farmington Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Clyde Ross. Crews immediately departed the high school for the Education Center, which is located at the intersection of High and Lincoln Street.

Upon arriving and deploying Farmington’s tower truck to the building’s northeast corner, some at the scene reported seeing smoke rise off the building. Firefighters cleared and then entered the building in an effort to identify the cause of the smoke.

No one was hurt in the incident, Ross said. Traffic was blocked along Lincoln Street, nearby South Street and portions of High Street.

Responding crews included the towns of Farmington, Chesterville, Wilton, Temple, Jay, Industry, New Sharon, New Vineyard and Strong. Farmington Police and UMF Public Safety also responded, as did Central Maine Power and NorthStar EMS. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 9 p.m.

Dozens of firefighters traveled to the scene directly from a class at Mt. Blue Campus.

  1. I 2nd what Olaf says!! Midway through class last night we had to evacuate and most of the students figured it was “just a drill” and left their belongings behind. Class was eventually cancelled for the remainder of the evening.
