Cole Martin, age 7, found a cicada exoskeleton on Franklin Avenue in Farmington this week. Cole says "some people say there are not any cicadas in Maine, but I disagree, and I have proof of my disagreement (see picture)." Cole's Dad says, "aren't these responsible for the insect sonata in the South?"

Saw this house finch just singing away and had to try to get him. Every time he hit a certain note his feathers from his head would stand right up! (Photo by Jim Knox)

  1. I think the cicadas in Maine are called Dogday Harvestflies. They are a close relative to those in the south. Here is a link to some information about them:

  3. Makes my day when I get to see these collections of unique photos!

  4. amazing as usual......

  5. The cicadas here in Maryland are extremely loud. Not what I'd call a sonata. Luckily they only come once every seven years or so. I don't ever remember them in Maine and I know I never heard them!

Wonderful mix and quality of photos, as they always are! Thank you, all!
