  1. Look at the numbers! How much of Farmington’s numbers are college kids and our screaming liberal community!

  2. Voting age should be at least 21. There is no way an 18 yr. old has enough real world experience to participate in forming our government. What experience they do have is from ultra liberal teachers and professors.

As I read some of the comments posted before mine I am moved to write and raise the point that, even though there appear to be deep divisions within our communities, this country will be better served if we adopt an attitude of working together to solve our problems and let go of maintaining and creating more divisions.

    “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

    I would point out that in this statement from the Declaration of Independence the term “men” needs to include women as well.

    I realize that in posting this I will set myself up for becoming a target for those who react out of fear and anger, but I am not willing to sit silently by and watch our community suffer more than we are. To that end I have included my name so that you will know who I am – I will not hide behind a moniker. I am willing to engage with those who disagree with my point of view – in a civil conversation that is based in mutual respect.

    I am proud and deeply grateful to live in this country where I can stand up and share my opinion and vote my conscience. I am ashamed when I listen to those who want to exclude certain groups from having these same rights.

    May all citizens be able to enjoy these rights that so many have fought and died for.

  5. Captain- I began attending town meeting every year when I was 10 years old. I read and marked up the warrant ahead of time, I knew all of the issues and how they would impact my community. By the time I was 16 I knew more about Robert’s rules of order and Shoreland Zoning then most people do in late adulthood. Through my interactions with peers and social organizations that I was involved in I had encountered poverty, addiction, crime, as well as the negative affects of drugs. I had held a job and payed bills. I went with my parents to pay taxes and knew how increases in taxes could affect members of our communities. I was not alone in this knowledge and experience, many of my peers had this knowledge as well. Maybe not all 18 year olds are informed voters but all 30 year olds aren’t either. This isn’t a question of age it is a question of desire to be informed.

  6. I am sad about the elections. Not so much that my candidates didn’t win but because there is such a huge split in this country. I am scared of what I believe Donald Trump is capable of. I am hoping that he really will try to close the gap that is dividing us however that will take much patience and understanding of the differences of the peoples of our country. As the president said today, the sun will come up tomorrow.

  7. Joe you’re absolutely right, I should have excepted soldiers, my mistake.
    Rebekah, you are an exceptional person. I have never known such a civic minded child. Be honest with yourself; most 18 year olds couldn’t tell you where the many different taxes we pay are applied. Or who is speaker of the house or even Vice President! Most colleges preach a liberal agenda and then do all they can to herd their sheep to the polls. Is that real life experience?

  8. Interesting to see the towns that voted “NO” to the hike in the minimum wage. They are towns that are largely retail and service jobs…whereas Farmington voted “Yes” which have the college and the hospital..which are more geared to further education..

  9. Conservative voters can rightly feel satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment with the election of Donald Trump as our next president. However a word of caution to those who hope to see dramatic policy changes such as a large reduction in the national debt, dismantling of parts of the social safety net or the construction of a wall along the Mexican border. Trump is a “New York” Republican who may well become the most liberal GOP president since Theodore Roosevelt. Be realistic about what you wish for.

  11. Isn’t it interesting Captain Planet and Totally Disgusted that if anyone votes differently from you, has a different opinion from yours, then they are completely wrong. Well differences in opinions is what this country’s political system is based on. If we all believed the same thing, which is evidently in your mind your way of thinking, then we would be living lives similar to those under a dictatorship. Where there is no freedom of thought. No allowances to be different. I’m glad to be living here in the USA, where I, as a woman, who voted at age 18 in 1972 for the very first time as a registered Republican for Richard Nixon on the grounds that the ultra conservative southern Democrat George McGovern scared the livin … out of me… [surprising how much our new President Elect resembles him politically], am able to think independently, voice my opinion, and tell you respectfully that your narrow minded ultra conservatism is extremely egocentric. So in your personal relationships is there any room for compromise or is it always your way only right or wrong.

While I don’t disagree with your thought that differences of opinion improve the health of our republican (we live in a republic based on democratic principles) form of government, your characterization of Sen. McGovern as “the ultra conservative southern Democrat” is wildly inaccurate. George McGovern was one of the most liberal senators in Congress and made his reputation for his opposition to the Vietnam War. Maybe you’re confusing him with Gov. George Wallace, who was indeed an ultra conservative and racist leader from Alabama in the 1960’s.

  13. you know you are right.. I am confusing him w/ George Wallace. Old age is setting in .. The comparison of the campaign stance of our current President Elect is eerily reminiscent of that old guard.
