Moderator Craig Stickney addresses residents at a special town meeting held on Sept. 8 in which residents approved appropriating $3,500 to pay for Internal Revenue Service penalties. At the following meeting, two selectmen resigned.

CHESTERVILLE – Two residents turned in nomination papers for one of two seats open on the Board of Selectmen by Friday’s deadline.

According to Town Clerk Heather Wheeler, Tiffany Estabrook and Stephen Welch both turned in their nomination papers for the remainder of a three-year term for Selectman, Assessor and Overseer of the Poor.

No one filed nomination papers to fill the remainder of a one year term.

The two seats were left vacant after selectmen Anne Lambert and David Archer resigned at the Sept. 15 meeting. Archer’s term had two years and four months remaining. Lambert had four months remaining on her term.

Both Lambert and Archer were elected in March at the annual town meeting, with Lambert serving a one-year term due to the departure of another selectman.

Nomination papers were due back to the Town Hall at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 with at least 25 signatures of registered voters. The election itself will be held in conjunction with the national election on Nov. 8.

Wheeler said four people took out the nomination papers, but only two people returned with them.

Both Lambert and Archer resigned after it was discovered that Internal Revenue Service penalties discussed on Sept. 8 had already been paid prior to that special town meeting. At that meeting, residents reluctantly agreed to appropriate $3,500 with the understanding that the penalties needed to be swiftly addressed to avoid generating further interest.

Lambert resigned at the beginning of the Sept. 15 meeting, reading from a letter of resignation submitted to the town. Archer submitted a brief, handwritten letter of resignation at the same meeting.

Selectmen Chair Guy Iverson, Matthew Welch and Paul Caldwell currently serve on the Chesterville Board of Selectmen.
