FARMINGTON – Graduates were called on to support higher education during the University of Maine at Farmington’s 152nd commencement on Saturday morning.

Under bright blue skies, 339 of a total of 365 bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates marched through campus as hundreds of family members and friends stood applauding and giving the occasional shout out to their favorite graduate.

Historian and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Alan Shaw Taylor, gave a rousing commencement address, urging the graduates to become advocates for those who want to pursue a college education but may not be able to afford it.

Taylor, a Maine native, is only the fourth person to win two Pulitzer Prizes for American History since the establishment of the award in 1917. He received his first Pulitzer in 1996 for American History for “William Cooper’s Town: Power and Persuasion on the Frontier of the Early Republic” and his second  in 2014 for “The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832,” a book about runaway slaves who helped the British military.

In his speech to graduates, Taylor recalled Jedediah Peck,  as “a common farmer and carpenter and sometime preacher,” who despite little formal education went on to become a state legislator (1798–1804) and forever be known as the founding father of the public school system in New York state.

“He wanted to ‘bring improvement within the reach and power of the humblest citizen,'” Taylor said. “He did so not simply because education would improve the future income of the educated individual. Instead, Peck emphasized that the true liberty and economic opportunity for all required educated citizens. Peck warned, ‘In all countries where education is confined to a few people, we always find arbitrary governments and abject slavery.’”

Taylor commended Peck for his campaign-who along with others across the country-advocated for free public education for everyone in his state where there were no public school systems beyond New England and even there they extended no farther than grammar school.

“Imagine how poor our nation would be today if there had been no Jedediah Pecks or if they had failed. Imagine how backward our economy would be, how stinted our culture would be, how inadequate our technology would be, how hungry most of our people would be, and how even more unequal our society would be, and how hollow would be our pretensions to democracy,” he said and he noted that, “Unfortunately, throughout this country we are in retreat from Jedediah Peck’s dream.”

The cost to go to college just one or two generations ago was far less than it is today. “During the past 20 years, every state legislature has dramatically cut back on its investment in colleges and universities. Tuition costs have skyrocketed. These legislators reason that voters prefer tax cuts over investing in higher education,” Taylor said. He warned that “unless we can redefine education as a public good once again, proportionally fewer Americans will benefit from higher education in the future. Our inequality will increase and our free government will become just a stage set for opportunists to pander to the prejudices and fears of the uneducated.”

Taylor urged today’s graduates, who can attest to the benefits of education and the hardships of rising costs, to vote. Noting those aged 18 to 26 have the lowest voter turnout: “My advice is to speak up, speak clearly, be persistent. Let everyone know that you care about education not just for yourself but for everyone.”

Taylor was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by UMF for his scholarly contributions.

In her opening remarks, Kathryn Foster, UMF’s president, noted that the Class of 2016 was her class because she took the helm at UMF in the fall of 2012 when they were also entering their first year.

“We were first-years together, green and a little clueless, but we dove in, worked hard, and got involved,” she said.

Emily Rumble
Emily Rumble of York gives the student address at UMF’s commencement Saturday.

Foster said of those graduating on Saturday, 12 students received a master’s of science in education degree in leadership and 353 a bachelor’s degree. Of the undergraduates, 47 percent earned a bachelor of science degree, and 46 percent, a bachelor of arts degree and 7 percent either a bachelor of fine arts or general studies degree.

About 31 percent of the class are graduating as an education major, with the single most common undergraduate degree at 55 is in psychology. English and creative writing majors each had 19 graduates.

In the student address, Emily Rumble of York, a secondary education major, told her fellow graduates, “During important milestones in our lives, I’ve come to acknowledge that it’s helpful to have a sense of humor and to celebrate our endings as new beginnings.”

She said, UMF will always seem like home, because “what really made Farmington special were the people in it; life-long friends, professors who know you as more than just a name on a roster, and even smiling strangers you pass on the sidewalk.”

She told her classmates, “Keep your curiosity, live boldly, pursue your passions, and stay in touch.”
