UMF graduates 387 in commencement ceremony Saturday

34 mins read
Hundreds of family members and friends of the 387 graduates attended the commencement ceremony held Saturday outside at UMF.

FARMINGTON – A poet’s gentle reminder that “family helps family” on life’s road to success and a sustained standing ovation for the retiring UMF president, were among the highlights at the University of Maine at Farmington’s commencement ceremony held under perfectly blue skies on Saturday.

Seven bagpiers led a procession of UMF faculty, administrators and 387 bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients down High Street to waiting family members and friends all armed with cameras and video recorders to the commencement venue set up between the computer center and student center buildings.

After Theodora J. Kalikow, UMF’s retiring president of 18 years, nearly completed her welcoming speech, Daniel Gunn, UMF’s vice president for academic affairs, interrupted the proceeding to give thanks to Kalikow for “her warm humanity” and productive years at the helm. Then everyone stood and applauded Kalikow. She has served the longest of any president since it became a four-year college in 1945.

Theodora Kalikow, UMF's preisdent who is retiring at the end of next month, is applauded by Daniel Gunn, UMF's vice president for academic affairs.
Poet Wesley McNair delivers the commencement's keynote speech at UMF's graduation Saturday.

Maine’s poet laureate and a UMF professor emeritus and writer-in-residence, Wesley McNair, delivered the keynote speech that was punctuated by three of his poems “about things that have mattered to me over the course of my life as a poet,” he told the audience. The theme of each poem he chose to read involved a journey and had a car in it.

McNair noted that each graduate has a dream and a journey to reach that dream. But things don’t always go according to “Plan A,” so sometimes you’ve got to go to “Plan B.”

“When unforeseen obstacles get in the way of your dream, find another way to dream it. Plan B, graduates, is your secret weapon,” McNair advised. He dedicated his poem recited at the ceremony to all those family members who have helped the graduates along the way.

McNair ended his speech with his poem about driving all by yourself along a small rural road, “that tells you two things: that you’re way off the beaten track, and that there are twists and turns to discover with your headlights as you go. This poem about individual, spiritual travel is called ‘Driving to Dark Country:’

Past where the last
gang of signs

comes out of the dark
to wave you back,

and past telephone
wires lengthening

with the light of someone
beyond the next hill

just returning,
a slow single line

will take the eye
of your high beam. Around you

will be jewels
of the fox-watch.

Great trees will rise up
to see you passing by

all by yourself,
riding on light.”

Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott receives his honorary degree from Daniel Gunn, interium provost, as UMF president, Theodora Kalikow watches, at right.

UMF awarded honorary degrees of Doctor of Humane Letters to McNair and Farmington native Seth Wescott, the snowboarding, two-time Olympic gold medalist, for his athletic accomplishments and his advocacy for the state of Maine. Wescott told the graduates that he took a different path toward snowboarding  and “realized my dream. I encourage all of you to do that,” he said.

Merissa Beaulieu, a graduating senior from Monmouth, gave the student address likening the experience of the past four years to the lessons learned by Harry Potter at Hogwarts and reminding fellow graduates to stay true to the values learned at UMF.

Kelly Greene of Farmington was highlighted by Kalikow as one of the first students to enroll in UMF’s outdoor recreation business administration program. Greene interned at EcoVenture summer camp in Rangeley and at Saddleback ski area and will be attending Columbia University in the fall towards a master’s degree in applied physiology.

Marjorie Murray Medd, member of the UMS Board of Trustees, delivered greetings to the graduates from the University of Maine System. Degrees were conferred by Kalikow and Gunn.

UMF graduates receive their diplomas.
