FARMINGTON – Several University of Maine at Farmington student-volunteers spent the day installing energy efficient window panels at the Western Maine Homeless Outreach shelter.

The shelter, nearly a year old, is located in the lower level of Living Waters Assembly of God Church at 547 Wilton Road. The volunteer work was part of the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area’s 4th annual Days of Caring, in which projects are paired with volunteers.

For the “buttoning up” project at the shelter, window panels were constructed and installed, along with other work that was needed to make the shelter more energy efficient. Tony Gill, retired trainer and quality control for Maine’s DOE funded Low Income Weatherization Program, provided the how-to workshop on energy efficiency and the small things you can do around your house to save even more on heating costs next winter.

The shelter, with a capacity of 16 people (updated) in need of a place to stay, opened its doors in November 2013. Fund raising to keep the shelter operational is ongoing.

Donations can be mailed to Western Maine Homeless Outreach, 547 Wilton Road, Farmington, ME 04938. For more information, email: wmhomelessoutreach@gmail.com.

  1. WMHO is an emergency overnight shelter that has a maximum capacity of 16 guests. Over the summer our numbers have decreased and we currently have very few guests. With the weather getting cold we are getting more calls for individuals and families needing shelter. Thank you to the community for the amazing continued support. We really couldn’t do it with out all of you!
