FARMINGTON – The hundreds of graduating University of Maine at Farmington students were challenged by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Ford in his speech to think of their new degree as “an artistic vocation, a calling,” and whatever they create “to try to make it beautiful, try to make it better,” during the 150th commencement ceremony held Saturday morning.

Kathryn A. Foster, UMF’s president, welcomed the 416 marching seniors of a total of 442, and noted at the first commencement 150 years ago, the 11 students graduating from what was then the Western State Normal School were all from Maine towns, all earned elementary teaching degrees and 10 of them were women.

At the 2014 graduation held in the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center because it was raining, 12 earned their masters in education; 52 percent of the undergraduate degrees were a bachelor of science, 42 percent a bachelor of arts and 6 percent were bachelor degrees in fine arts or general studies.

Celebrated  author Ford, 70, of East Boothbay, was awarded an honorary doctorate at Saturday’s commencement for his literary contributions. The author of 11 works of fiction, “Independence Day,” received the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and his 1986 award-winning novel, “The Sportswriter,” was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 best novels ever written.

For all the family members attending commencement, Ford said in his speech that he could feel a collective sigh of relief that their student is finally graduating and “you thought this day would never come.” Whatever debts that may have been incurred, he said to the students ” you have have done it to improve yourselves. You’re going to be worth $17,500 more annually than the high school graduate,” Ford said referring to a research study that concluded college graduates earn that amount more annually than their peers who have a high school diploma.

“With your precious degree you have a responsibility to use it to make a better world,” Ford said. He told the graduating class at his age, “the quickening age,” he’s got to “make the power up to finish the book. No one is going to do it for you.”

Calling them his list of platitudes always expected at commencements, he quoted several writers.

William Butler Yeats’ “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire,” Ford said, “think things up, make something be there where there wasn’t anything else before.”

Political commentator George Will’s quote: “talent is a species of vigor,” is to work hard no matter what the circumstances. Ford illustrated this by noting he was the first in his family to graduate college by earning a degree in English from Michigan State University in 1962. When he applied for college, he said his father had died by then, he was and is dyslexic, had been in trouble with the police and worked as a switchman on a train line. “They felt sorry for me,” he said and let him enroll.

“I work harder than anybody I know, except my wife,” he said. Despite his advancing age, “I still want to make a difference, to make it better.”

Yeats said,  “The arts lie dreaming of what is to come,” Ford told the graduates comes in “to think of your new degree as an artistic vocation.” Vocation as a calling, an optimism for the future. For him, it’s the optimistic idea that when he sits down to write a book, readers will like what he writes.

“I start with an empty space and make things to put there,” Ford said. To the graduates: “Try to make it beautiful, try to make the future better. Enact your vigor, it calls upon the imaginative artist.”

Vice president of the senior class, Sean Skillern of Naples, gave the student speech. The elementary education major and president of the local Rotaract organization urged his classmates to cherish the memories of their years at UMF because they “make us feel whole, and will continue to do so when our days may seem half empty. The memories that made us who we are, because we were here,” he said.

“I remember racing out of my parents’ car, saying hasta la vista baby, I’m free at last, thank God almighty, I am free at last, stepping into my dormitory,” he began and then recalled everything from “professors throughout my college experience, never skipping a beat, inviting me into their offices whenever I was feeling down and needed a pick me up. That is a teacher,” to the smell of fried dough on High Street at fair time. From a trip last year with Farmington Rotary Club members, “I remember when I went to Guatemala and Safe Passage, and seeing how the children had nothing, but they had an education, the ability to rise with new horizons. I remember being thankful for all I ever had,” Skillern said. He concluded with: “And I’ll always remember leaving Farmington today, taking the slow easy ride home, because God almighty, I was free.”

Alumni members of the UMF class of 1964 attended the commencement, celebrating their 50th anniversary class reunion.
