Wayne R. Durrell (1945-2015)

STRONG – Wayne R. Durrell, 70, of Strong, passed away peacefully at his home on Nov. 27, 2015, after a long illness.

He was born on April 24, 1945 in Waterville. He grew up with his parents and six siblings in Freeman and attended school in Strong. He joined the United States Navy in 1962 and was later stationed in Argentina, Newfoundland where he met and married his late wife, Angela on Oct. 16, 1965. They moved to Strong shortly thereafter where they raised their five children. Wayne worked as a logger most of his life and started a lawn care business in his later years before his illness forced him to retire.

Wayne enjoyed the outdoors. He grew up on a farm and participated in 4-H as a child. He was an avid hunter. He also enjoyed watching stock car racing and baseball, playing cards, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He was predeceased by his wife Angela; his parents, Everett Durrell and Chestina Beedy; and his brother Basil Durrell.

He is survived by his five children: Dean Durrell and wife Lori of Madrid; Daniel Durrell of Strong; Derrick Durrell of Strong; Donald Durrell of Rangeley; and Denise Durrell Fast and husband Robert of Freeport; his grandchildren: Brandon, Brookelyn, Brittney, Chad, and Hayden; his great granddaughter Summer Rae; his siblings, Colon Durrell of Farmington; Bonita Pond and husband Skip of Farmington, N.H.; Vicki McDonald and husband Sike of Jay; Michael Durrell of Temple; and Rita Tripp and husband Parker of Embden; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Wayne will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a kind and caring person who loved children and opened his doors to anyone in need. Many will miss his wisdom and advice.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015 at Adams-McFarlane Funeral & Cremation Services, 108 Court St., Farmington. Donations may be made in Wayne’s memory to the Togus VA Medical Center, 1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330. Condolences may be sent for the family at www.adamsmcfarlane.com.

  2. I remember when Wayne worked with us at Forsters’ in the woods. He always made it fun and interesting, and will remember and cherish those times to my last days.

  8. Wayne was a wonderful man.. Funny and fair.. Caring and kind…I will always remember the evening he arrived home from Newfoundland with his bride Angela..and shortly there after arrive at our small apartment, to introduce her to Nelson and myself.. It was an evening of laughter and celebration that will stay with me always.. RIP dear Wayne.

  9. Denise, Deano, Dan, Rick and Donny, I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your Dad. We all have so many good memories…visits, card games, horseshoes, parties at camp….and your Mom & I forever patiently waiting for Wayne & Glen to come home from overnight romps! Many dear Cherished Memories! I am sure Wayne received quite a welcoming upon entering the final resting place with Angela being his guide! Sending my deepest sympathy and love and praying for peace for all of you.

  10. Having moved south in the late ’60s, I missed out knowing Wayne as an adult. But judging from all I’ve read here, he was a well respected, much liked and greatly loved man.
    As children, I knew Wayne had many friends. And I never heard anyone say anything negative about Wayne.
    Which is no surprise, really.
    Wayne and his siblings all helped out on the farm growing up. They were all known to be hard workers and “good kids”.
    My sincere sympathy to all of Wayne’s children, grandchildren and siblings.
    You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

  13. in the early 70s I used to babysit you guys! your dad always wanted to wrestle for the money BUT he always paid me cause he was twice my size I missed that your mom had died also so my condolences for both need to pay more attention I guess
