WILTON – A Wilton man was arrested twice within four days this week after police say he assaulted and injured two older adult members of the same household.

Brian Bitting, 36, was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 20 after an adult male staying at his home called police to report an assault had taken place on another adult male related to Bitting. The relative suffered a broken nose, black eye and a cut on his face, said Wilton Police Chief Heidi Wilcox on Thursday.

Bitting was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault. He was released later that same day on $250 cash bail.

In subsequent interviews with the two men who have been living with Bitting, Officer Ethan Kyes reported that the man who had initially called to report the first assault had also been assaulted by Bitting. Officers had removed the man, who is not related to Bitting, from the residence to a shelter for veterans. Once he felt safe enough, Wilcox said, he reported that he had been choked by Bitting, suffered bruising on his neck and the trauma had affected his speech.

Bitting was arrested a second time on Wednesday, Aug. 24 and charged with aggravated assault, in connection with the alleged strangulation.

The elder abuse “had been ongoing” Wilcox said and she added, the veteran “was scared for his friend’s life” when he made the decision to call police and report it.

The two older men were dependent on services from the household, such as neither could drive,  and “were afraid to say anything,” Wilcox said.

  1. How sad is this? Two elderly men not to even mention a veteran!! There has got to be more services for these guys to help them be safe and not dependent on someone that may have beat them…Wonder how long this has been going on??? So sad!!!!

  2. Sad indeed, I hope this guy goes to directly to jail….and is forbidden from being within 30 feet of any elderly person. or for that matter, woman, child or pet! Nice way to treat our elders and vets… so glad the victim had the courage to call it in! Keep alert folks- people like this need to be called out!

  3. My first comment was censored so I will tone it down. Anyone who picks on someone weaker is a bully and should be punished (severely)

  4. Must be a typo, 250$ bail????? Should be 250,000.
This guy will eventually pick on the wrong person.

  5. With all the funding cuts to violence-prevention services expect to see more of this. In an effort to keep taxes down, we’re selling out our most vulnerable populations: children, the elderly, the disabled, etc.

  6. Jenn is right. This is an horribly extreme example, but stressed home based caregivers sometimes behave in ways even the most devoted and humane ones don’t feel good about. Support services are essential. In retrospect, it’s hard not to have seen this second assault coming.

  7. This is horrible. This makes me sick. I take care of people everyday. You don’t loose your grip on an elderly person. These people should be well taken care of. Very sad :(

  8. Nothing wrong with using a good old frying pan or a bat to ward these creeps off. Better yet, to have a big dog and a gun. If they get shot up or bitten, maybe they would think twice.

  9. Frumpleton, if only it were that simple. In many cases that wouldn’t help. We’re talking about people who have no real options. They are alienated from society, and they depend upon a caregiver to meet their daily needs. We’re talking about people who are unable to fight back.
