CHESTERVILLE – The Garden Angel Committee is kicking off another season of assisting seniors, physically disabled, or low/fixed income people in Franklin County enjoy the benefits of growing and eating fresh vegetables.

Those signing up for the program are paired with volunteers who give advice on how to plant, maintain, and harvest their gardens. If you are interested in being a volunteer to work with recipients, volunteer applications are available at the Franklin County Extension Office. This year we are also hoping to have an informational sheet to provide to the recipients when the boxes, plants, and seeds are distributed.

The project originated in 2012 under the direction of Susan Gill, Franklin County Cooperative Extension executive board regional representative and chairwoman of the North Chesterville Extension Homemakers. She requested assistance from fellow Extension members, Linda Myhaver from the Neighborhood Extension Homemakers, Amy Palmer from the Clearwater Extension Homemakers and advisory board secretary, and Linda Gramlich secretary of the North Chesterville Extension Homemakers and representative to the advisory board. Additional assistance has been provided by Dave Fuller and Judy Smith, Franklin County Cooperative Extension professionals.

Volunteers from the start, Harvey Hayden, Bob Gramlich, and Dan Palmer have been instrumental with the construction of the boxes built with the assistance of 4-H members, acquiring soil, loam, compost, and then the distribution of the boxes to the Garden Angel recipients. This program could not exist without our wonderful volunteers.

Currently, there are 24 boxes available for the project. Applications are available now and are available at different locations throughout Franklin County and at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office, 38 Pleasant Street, Farmington, or call the office 778-4650. You may also contact Sue Gill, project coordinator, 778-6978 for more information about the project. Applications are due back to the Extension Office by May 1. Everyone who applies will be notified by May 15th as to their acceptance or non-acceptance into the program. The Garden Angel Project is in partnership with the Maine Cooperative Extension.
