WILTON – Western Maine Play Museum has lots of great news to share: a sneak preview of the Dark Room exhibit coming up, a grant from the Farmington Rotary, courtyard brick sales, and the beginning of exterior renovations on the museum and courtyard.

Because the Franklin County Children’s Task Force Children’s Festival was cancelled in February, WMPM has enlisted the help of the Wilton Free Public Library to share a sneak preview of one of its exhibits. A Dark Room Black Light Adventure will be open to the public in the library children’s room on Wednesday, March 23, from 6-8 p.m. Families are invited to explore how “black” (ultraviolet) lighting can change the appearance of many everyday articles. Children will also be invited to complete a 6-foot glow-in-the-dark outer space mural, which will be displayed in the library after the event. The Black Light Adventure is just one of the many rotating exhibits that will be featured in the museum Dark Room.

Western Maine Play Museum has received a $2,000 grant from the Farmington Rotary Club, which will be used to purchase furniture for the Train Room. Naming rights to the Train Room itself were purchased by the Shibles-Colley family. Museum board members are grateful for the ongoing support of these community leaders.

The courtyard outside the museum building is making exciting headway. Over 90 bricks, each engraved with a personal message, were sold to area individuals and businesses. The museum realized over $12,000 in donations from the sale of these bricks. Steve Mitchell and his students from Maine School of Masonry plan on starting work on constructing the courtyard as soon as possible this spring.

The best news of all: reconstruction of the exterior of the building will begin as soon as the area around the museum is safe for working. Thanks to Josh Wojcik of Upright Frameworks, who volunteered at the very beginning of museum planning sessions to do this work at cost.

It will be heartening to see tangible progress toward the completion of this wonderful community resource. The museum appreciates your ongoing support.

Western Maine Play Museum is a registered non-profit that incorporated in November of 2013 and is led by a 13-member board of directors.
