The film’s title translates as “The Presence,” a form of address for the Dalai Lama, one of the most influential Buddhist teachers in the world today and a constant voice for compassion and understanding. The film will be shown at the University of Maine at Farmington’s North Dining Hall, Suite A, at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The film is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

Kundun was released in 1997. It was directed by Martin Scorsese. It covers the years from 1937, when monks begin a search for the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, through the 1949 invasion of Tibet by the Chinese Red Army and the Dalai Lama’s escape 10 years later across the forbidding Himalayas to India.

The showing is sponsored by Full Moon Sangha, a Zen Buddhist practice group in the tradition of Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. Full Moon Sangha meets each Monday at Old South Church from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for meditation, chanting and dharma sharing. For more information see our website fullmoonsangha.org

The Buddhist Movie Matinee series will continue in March with a showing of the Korean film Why Did Bodidharma Leave for the East?
