FARMINGTON – Full Moon Sangha will show the film Kundun, about the early life of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on Jan. 18 as part of its winter Buddhist Movie Matinee series.
The film’s title translates as “The Presence,” a form of address for the Dalai Lama, one of the most influential Buddhist teachers in the world today and a constant voice for compassion and understanding. The film will be shown at the University of Maine at Farmington’s North Dining Hall, Suite A, at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The film is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.
Kundun was released in 1997. It was directed by Martin Scorsese. It covers the years from 1937, when monks begin a search for the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, through the 1949 invasion of Tibet by the Chinese Red Army and the Dalai Lama’s escape 10 years later across the forbidding Himalayas to India.
The showing is sponsored by Full Moon Sangha, a Zen Buddhist practice group in the tradition of Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.
