FARMINGTON – On Friday, July 13, volunteers coordinated by the United Way of the Tri Valley Area worked on several projects at LEAP’s Stone Soup Gardens. Fourteen people worked a total of 43 hours in the baking hot sun. Part of the United Way’s Days of Caring, the projects at LEAP will benefit staff and, individuals supported by the organization, as well as the community.

The projects included:

• Staining wood for the Darlene Rowe Memorial Gazebo. Darlene, a nurse and longtime administrator of two LEAP assisted living programs, passed away last year suddenly after struggling with Lupus for several years. Beloved by staff and the people she helped support, a fundraising effort was undertaken to create an accessible gazebo for people to enjoy. Led by the volunteer efforts of Lynne Lee, Larry Cypher and Carlene Wilbur, LEAP is hoping to have a grand opening celebration during Direct Support Professional Recognition Week in September.

• Weeding, watering and transplanting at the Stone Soup Gardens plots. Several volunteers spent the day working the raised beds and gardens maintained on the property. Raised beds allow for easier access for people with disabilities, and the garden sites provide food and decorations for LEAP events and community donations. This year we are hoping to have enough pumpkins for LEAP home decorations and some left over to donate to the Maurer meals project.

• The third project volunteers worked on is a community trail system and field maze. This trail system was designed to give LEAP staff and individuals supported a free, local and healthy option for fitness and recreation, and are open to the public. The crew improved the trail and started work on a series of wellness stations along the trail. For more information and or directions to this trail system, please contact LEAP’s Executive Director Darryl Wood at  darryl@leapcommunity.org

Katrina Fay, Carlene Wilbur and Jane Shaw lend a hand in keeping our raised garden beds weed free.
