Dead River Area Historical Society to raise funds for plaque improvements

EUSTIS – The Dead River Area Historical Society will sponsor a Walk-A-Thon on Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m.

The starting line will be at the Stratton Elementary School parking lot going along School Street and turning around at the site of the Old Dump 2 miles away and returning to the school parking lot. This will be a fun and fit activity for all ages from kindergartners through senior citizens. Drinks and snacks will be provided at each mile marker along the way.

This year the goal is to replace the WWII Memorial Plaque that has been on the outside to the museum for years. Dead River Area Historical Society was given an estimate of $2,000 to replace the 108 names on a bronze plaque and have raised that amount though grants from the Sugarloaf Charitable Trust and The Davis Family Foundation. However, the society has added three more names and asked for the names to be larger. It will cost $600 more, plus the cost of shipping, and the society doesn’t have time to write more grants.

“We ask for your help in raising this money through our annual Walk-A-Thon,” the society said in a statement released this week. “Help us honor these men who so bravely serve our country.”

Pledge sheets can be picked up at Pine’s Market, Northland Cash, Fotter’s Market, and Flagstaff Fuel and they need to be turned in at the Walk-A-Thon on Saturday, May 9.

For the safety of smaller participants, the society asks for no running or jogging, only walking.
