KENNEBUNKPORT – Sally Speich of the Farmington Conservation Commission accepted the 38-year Tree City award at the annual Maine Arbor Week celebration held recently in scenic downtown Kennebunkport at the Community House.

Jan Santerre, Project Canopy coordinator and Walter Whitcomb, commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) presented the award.

Farmington residents can be proud to be one of only three towns/cities that have been in the program for 38 years, since the program started. The other two municipalities with 38 years include this year’s event host, Kennebunkport and Westbrook.

The Farmington Conservation Commission members were congratulated for keeping this designation going. Project Canopy is about communities recognizing the tangible benefits that long-term community forestry programs can provide by building bridges within the town government and its citizens to maximizing the long term values trees provide. Project Canopy is a program of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine forest Service and GrowSmart Maine.
