WILTON – Fit Girls is pleased to announce that the organization has received a Lois Lenski Covey Foundation 2018 Bookmobile Grant to purchase books for the “Fit Lit rolling library” offered at each of the elementary schools in Regional School Unit 9.

The purpose of The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation is to advance literacy and foster a love of reading among under-served and at-risk children and youth. Lois Lenski, celebrated author and illustrator of over one hundred children’s books and the 1946 Newbery medalist for Strawberry Girl, established the Foundation as a charitable institute 50 years ago. Since then the Foundation has assisted over 400 organizations in their efforts to nurture reading skills, gain access to books, and instill a love of reading.

Deb Aseltine, Fit Girls Director acknowledges the importance of grants of this type as this grant expands reading opportunities for girls in our area.

“Part of the Fit Girls mission is to expose girls to great books,” Aseltine said. “A wonderful book can inspire, motivate and comfort.”

During each Fit Girl after school session, girls are encouraged to borrow books from the Fit Lit Library. By introducing girls to meaningful books with positive messages and engaging stories, Fit Girls helps girls gain a deeper appreciation for themselves and their communities. We believe running and reading go hand in hand.

Fit Girls would also like to thank Kenny Brechner and Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers, for their guidance and support of selecting wonderful books because of this grant. For more information about Fit Girls, please visit: www.fitgirlsofwiltonmaine.org
