Fit Girls program begins April 1

WILTON - The Fit Girls after-school program is gearing up for its seventh year spring program beginning April 1. The reading and running program continues to engage 4th, 5th and 6th grade girls and is offered at Cape Cod Hill School on Mondays, Academy Hill School on Tuesdays and Cascade Brook School on Thursdays.

The 6th grade program is a combined yoga, running and reading program at Cascade Brook on Thursdays as well.
The program's mission remains "to promote a healthy and active lifestyle that includes regular exercise for the body, the mind and the heart.” The confidence the girls build helps with self-esteem, maneuvering the middle years and helps girls gain a deeper appreciation for themselves, their communities, and their unlimited potential. Fit Girls encourages girls to aspire to what is possible. Reading and running go hand-in-hand, both opening doors for girls to have healthy bodies and healthy minds.

This spring, Fit Girls will begin their session with Kate Parker’s book, “Strong is the New Pretty.” The activities include a positive book discussion, healthy games, stretching and running and or walking in laps around the school with a cool down and good thought for the day to finish. As with all the sessions, the running program is designed to gradually and safely build endurance to run or walk a local 5K race. This spring, the girls will be participating in the Androscoggin Hospice 5K. It is one way the girls can give back to the community. They raise funds through a read-a-thon in April and a portion of the funds are donated to the Hospice House.

Deb Aseltine, Fit Girls Director would like to thank the Fit Girls coaches: Tiffany Baker, Tina Davis, Catherine Dennis, Marcia Parker, Merrily Welch, Katie Perry, Ali Butler and Patty Murray. Aseltine acknowledges the programs would not be possible without these coaches and their commitment Fit Girls. Also, a thank you to RSU 9 for the use of the facilities.
