Local cyclists planning meeting for 2014 Trek Across Maine Oct. 15

FARMINGTON – Before the biking season gives way to thoughts of skiing, here’s one last opportunity to join local cyclists and help plan a team for the 2014 Trek Across Maine.

The next Trek Across Maine will mark the 30th anniversary of what has become the Maine Lung Association’s best known fundraiser. Under the stewardship of Bill Marceau for the past several years, there has been a local Farmington team represented in the Trek. Over time, many different members of all sorts trickled through the ranks, though Marceau remained the one constant. This coming year will mark Marceau’s stepping down as team captain while he devotes more time to his real estate businesses. Local resident Dennis Haszko who has participated in eight Treks since his first one in 1999 will be team captain for 2014. The last two years, Haszko has accomplished the Trek with his son Andrew and plans to add his other son Ryan next year.

Perhaps it’s the fact that the Trek historically occurs on Father’s Day Weekend, but the team has included several other father/son pairs throughout the years and hopes to see more local participants this year. In order to help make that happen, Northern Lights Hearth & Sports will officially sponsor the newly created “Northern Lights Team” in the 2014 Trek.

“There are a lot of cyclists in this area and we’d really like to put Farmington on the map with this team,” Haszko said. To get things going, a Northern Lights Team has been formally established for those to join when registering online for the Trek.

The team will also be having an information session and get-together to say thanks to Bill Marceau for his many years of effort for the Trek. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 6 to 7 p.m at the Homestead Restaurant. Anyone interesting in participating on the Northern Lights Team or volunteering in any capacity are welcome to attend. For more information, contact Dennis Haszko at 778-4870 or email Haszko@gmail.com.
