FARMINGTON – Youth ages 12-18 are invited to join the 4-H Blacksmith Special Interest Club. This fun, free-to-join, six-session workshop will be held at the Farmington Fairgrounds on July 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 22 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. The 4-H Blacksmith SPIN Club is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H in partnership with the Western Maine Blacksmith Association.

Working with experienced adults, participants will learn about blacksmithing history and tools, forge safety, fire-lighting and basic blacksmithing skills including: drawing-out, tapering and bending steel. Hands-on lessons will also include twisting, punching, scrollwork as well as forging nails and spoons.

This opportunity is available to both current 4-H members and youth who are interested in joining 4-H for the first time. Space is very limited and registration is first-come first-serve. Youth must commit to attending all six sessions. To register for the 4-H Blacksmithing SPIN Club, please contact Janine Winn at (207) 491-1465 or j9sfarm@myfairpoint.net.

What is a 4-H SPIN Club? SPIN clubs are led by volunteers who have a passion for learning and want to share their knowledge with young people. We are looking for adults who are interested in starting other 4-H SPIN Clubs. We are planning now for SPIN Clubs that will meet in the next three to six months.

For more information about 4-H, or SPIN Clubs in general, please contact Dave Allen at (207) 778 4650 or david.p.allen@maine.edu.
