FARMINGTON – A kick off for the Gold LEAF Senior College-University of Maine at Farmington summer term will be held on Wednesday, June 17, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the University of Maine at Farmington Olsen Student Center, North Dining Hall, at 111 South Street.

The Senior College offers classes and activities for people age 50 or older, and their spouses/partners regardless of age, who are interested in lifelong learning opportunities and socializing with people who have similar interests.

There are no tests, homework, or educational requirements to be a part of Gold LEAF. Gold LEAF is a non-profit, member-run organization sponsored by the University of Maine at Farmington, and is one of 17 Senior Colleges in the state. Go to the website at http://goldleaf.wikispaces.com for much more information.

The offerings range from active, including tennis, tai chi, kayak/canoe trips, bird walks and hikes to cultural and educational such as book discussions, opera and theater, Spanish, armchair travel, history and current events. The term runs from June 18 through Oct. 18.

Registrations open before the kickoff. Because some classes fill up early, everyone is encouraged to register for classes as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the kick-off event on June 17, although registrations may be done that day.

Annual membership dues are $30 for the year starting July 1. A summer membership is available at a reduced cost. Courses have nominal fees ranging from $3 to $20.
