Swing dancing in Farmington on Aug. 24
FARMINGTON - A swing dance will be held on Aug. 24 from 6-10 pm, at the Fairbanks Meeting House (508 Fairbanks Road, in Farmington). Sergei Slussky of the American Ballroom Dance Academy will be offering lessons from 6-7 pm, after which the Foothills Jazz Quartet will perform live from 7-9 pm.
Sergei Slussky taught and competed extensively throughout his native Russia, Europe, and the United States before opening the American Ballroom Dance Academy in Portland together with Polina Kirillova. He has experience teaching a wide range of students, from beginners to experienced dancers, and is certified to teach by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance.
“It’s really exciting to have someone of his talent and skill coming up to the Farmington area to teach,” Siiri Stinson, one of the organizers of the dance, said. “People will be able to learn new moves and use them right after during the dance. Ideally, this will be something we can start doing a few times a year.”
The Foothills Jazz Quartet is a group composed of four area musicians who primarily perform the vocal jazz repertoire of the mid 20th century. Interested in filling the adult jazz ensemble void in the area, they formed in 2011, focused on bringing old jazz standards to life, mixing in some blues and contemporary music as well.
There will be concessions on site (including artisan bread from local baker, Breadweavers), and no partner is necessary. Tickets are $15/person and available for purchase online at http://seriouslyswing-efbevent.eventbrite.com/ or at Mooseville, in downtown Farmington. Please note that tickets are available on a first come/first served basis—they are limited and only available while supplies last.
