PHILLIPS – It’s time. Time to immerse yourself in Franklin County’s cultural and economic heritage, if only for one day. Be it the history of a small town baseball team, Abenaki basketry, the paper making and shoe industries, steam-powered automobiles, narrow gauge railroads, flooded settlements, sporting camps, and much much more.

Join veteran and fledgling history buffs on June 4 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in a free, self-guided tour of some 20 historical societies and museums scattered throughout Franklin County, from Jay to Rangeley to Stratton, with stops along the way in Livermore Falls, Wilton, Farmington, Temple, Strong, Kingfield, New Portland, Madrid, New Vineyard, Phillips and Oquossic

“While they are unique in their holdings, the societies and museums are also unique in the days and hours and months they are open during the year. That’s why we created the one-day-we- are-all-open- at-the-same-time-history-tour,” said Jane Stinchfield of the Phillips Historical Society.

Stinchfield suggests you drop by your local historical society or museum on June 4 and pick up a map and head on out. While it’s impossible to get to all of them, you can get a taste of a few and return during their normal museum hours throughout the summer. And, for those who can’t make it on June 4, there will be a repeat on Oct. 8.
