Veteran recognition night scheduled

3 mins read

On Saturday, November 13, 2010 there will be special recognition for our local Maine State Veterans at the Farmington Baptist Church. Registration will begin at 2:30 PM and the recognition ceremony will start at 4 PM that day. This will be part of the Maine State “Honoring a Veteran” program and the continued recognition of our local hero’s. This is the third year we have conducted this program.

The State of Maine has established the “Honoring a Veteran” recognition program to honor our veterans for their honorable military service. The program honors those that have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in defense of freedom, those Former POW’s as well as those who are still POW’s and/or missing, those who were wounded in action and received the Purple Heart, and all of our veterans who honorably served our great nation and state.

Below is a list of the various State of Maine recognitions that are available.

Gold Star Honorable Service metal: Awarded to families of those service members who have given their lives in defense of the country since 2001.

Silver Star Honorable Service Metal and certificate: Awarded to veterans that were former POW’s as well as to those veterans that received a purple heart.

Bronze Star Honorable Service metal and certificate: Awarded to the families of those service members that lost their lives in the line of duty and not in a combat or combat support.

Honorable Certificate: These certificates are awarded to veterans that served on honorably during wartime for a war time certificate or peace time for a general service certificate.

On November 13th we want to recognize all of those veterans and families who are eligible for these recognitions. Additionally we want to welcome those veterans from last two years and continue to say thank you again for your service. It is our hope to have those that have recently served in the Gulf war to attend the ceremony too.

So even though you received the State “Honoring a Veteran” certificate we still want to present you with a special thanks for your service. Please contact me at 645-3420 or e-mail me at drtom16@hotmail.com if you would like to participate. Even if you do not contact me please come anyway. We will register you then.

Last year this was memorable night. This year it will be the same. If you have questions about either veteran recognition please call me at 645-3420 or e-mail me at drtom16@hotmail.com
