Aerial search yields charges against Strong man

STRONG - Police issued a summons to a local man Tuesday, saying that an aerial search located marijuana plants growing on his property.

Ivan L. Gould, Jr., 60, of 265 Burbank Hill in Strong, was issued a summons for marijuana cultivation and violating the conditions of release, both misdemeanors, following the reported seizure of 32 plants on the property.

According to Franklin County Sheriff's Department Lt. Niles Yeaton, plants were spotted on the residence from the air. A search by law enforcement personnel discovered 32 plants "in several locations on the property," according to Yeaton.

Gould was summonsed to appear in district court on Sept. 20.

  1. is that stuff still illegal... 32 plants is not really enough to justify the man hours or the fuel this ''mission'' took. wish the law'' would do more legwork and fight crime and thefts. this just seems petty and overboard. but we gotta get these dangerous drugs off the streets. ;)

  2. What a waste of the taxpayers money.

  3. Regulate and tax(I shudder to say that) the stuff and this guy would be out of business. Or wake up people, just lie to the right doctor and you can have five ounces of high grade pot a month legally! Either way, this guy is out of business.
History is a valuable tool when people are smart enough to use it. Anyone remember how Prohibition worked out?

  4. believe it alot better for people then the pills on the street but, wasn't this man arrested a while ago for having lbs of marijuana and plants in or around his home. how much does he need for his own use.

  5. Who knew you could violate your conditions of release for growing dope, AGAIN! and all you get is a summons. What a joke!! Not to mention a huge double standard!! If this were anyone else, the comments would go on for days about these "pot growin' thugs"

  6. How mant thousands of dollars did this "misdemeanor" cost taxpayers? When they could be trying to solve unsolved murders, thefts, and real crimes. And talk about real drugs such as alchol and pills.

  7. I agree with Mr. Balsonya 100%. What a waste of time, resources and money. All of the break-ins, assaults, pill popping etc. etc. going on in Franklin Cty and the people we pay dearly to serve and protect are more concerned with a harmless plant. The worst part is the court will most likely give Mr. Gould a harsher sentence than the 19 year old down the street that is on welfare and broke into your grandmothers house, beat her up and stole her meds got.

  8. They waste money on this but when you report a burglary around here they do NOTHING. Useless.

  9. To fed up citizen. I want to thank Farmington Police for the recovery of item stolen from me and they will be in court this month. Now just hope the judge gives them more than a slap on the hand as it's not the first time they have been there!

  10. THOSE THAT DON'T LIKE THE LAWS. CHANGE THEM!!!!!! AND STOP B....ING.

  11. *John EXACTLY !!!!

  12. Why is there no mention of the well known fact, that Ivan Gould II is a Registered Medical Marijuana Patient? Failing to mention this makes the above article pretty one sided. Address the waste of taxpayers money that is spent on harassing folks who are just growing medicine for themselves.

  13. To farmingtonite... the burglar was caught in the act stealing from my house yet nothing was done and nothing was recovered. Useless.

  14. to Maine Native,
when one has a medical marijuana recommendation one is allowed 6 plants not 32....while I agree that the cops have better things to do, one should stay within the law if they are going to use the law for their benefit......

  15. If the payient has a script leave him alone. Where are the funds for the herion and crack and "bath salts", etc. Lets get the real drugs here! And lets not forget all the rampant drinking and driving. Hard to believe this plant is more important, let alone the fuel to feed that helio. Waste of money when that money could be used for BAD drugs...just saying!

  16. Wish they would come up Rt. 149 a little further and get the pill pushers instead.

  17. There is no reason for him to have been arrested so what he had a few more plants than he was supposed to have maybe he is in a lot of pain and needs it he can legally grow so why not just let him have it. The cops would just rather waste our money for the damn gas to fly the helicopters around instead of trying to solve other way more important cases like unsolved murders.

  18. i agree with you MD if you have a script, at least know the law that it carrys with it. if you need it , you will know some what you are too grow or have.

  19. If we could encourage people to accept Jesus Christ into their lives, and to obey his non-burdensome teachings, that would be the best solution to the drug problem. Christianity teaches that the human body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Serious Christians do not use mind-bending drugs, nor do they drink alcohol to excess, in order to honor the Lord who created our bodies. If everyone followed Christ, there would be no drug problem; it would be non-existent.

  20. The cops enforce the law, they did as they are supposed to. Are there worse offenders out there? Of course. These searches give pause to growers they must spend more time attempting to hide their stashes. If not then they could and can grow whole fields with little worry of getting caught. I think its great that they found so little. If you dont like the way things are done then vote and change it instead of complaining here.

  21. I remember those helicopters well from back when I lived on the outskirts of Starks. I do not smoke weed or grow it. But that did not stop the pot-copters from flying low over my land, disturbing the peace and tranquility of my life on my own land, scaring my animals, not to mention the Viet Nam vet down the road who flashed back to the war every time the damn thing wop-wop-wopped over the treetops like some kind of bad scene out of Apocalypse Now.

If Gov. Foot-in-Mouth is looking for a useless program to cut to keep his promise to the taxpayers to balance the budget, how about cutting the pot planes and helicopters instead of MaineCare for cancer patients and the mentally ill?

  22. Where do you get your facts that serious christians don't use drugs or abuse alcohol? Have you taken a serious christian survey? I was raised baptist and I have seen my share of so called christians smoking pot or drinking to excess. I love how "serious christians" are so law abiding. . . yeah right!!!! Preach somewhere else!!!

  23. Prudent gardening in our very limited growing season suggests planting at least 50% more of most things than what you imagine you might need over the fall/winter to make up for weather/other losses. 32 plants isn't extreme if someone is really worried about obtaining their medication locally and consistently. Depends on size of plants, dosage, etc.

  24. Good point. Besides, this is an annual hobby for Mr. Gould. He may want to pay attention to up coming changes to the laws as of this week, especially laws that apply to outdoor cultivation. If Harry and the like have so much support for the cause, then we can expect to see them all in Augusta voicing thier opinions this week at the public forum taking place. I'm with MMG. Put up or shut up!!!!

  25. Um, no where did it say Mr. Gould was arrested. He received a summons-REGARDLESS of the fact that he violated his conditions of release. That's why we have "conditions of release" for anyway. No wonder teens today scoff at the law.

  26. seems to be 2 MD's here now.....

  27. to "the fool" lets not use this forum to preach... most christians i know are total hypocrites.. save it for church!!!

  28. "the fool" is no fool- that's truth and wisdom. I hope Mr. Gould gets the help he needs.

  29. Drastic says "most christians i know are total hypocrites",,,,
Then why are YOU calling them Christians, Drastic???
    Jesus probably wouldn't.
    Just sayin'.
    Judge not lest,,,,

  30. Drastic is just using the term that they call themselves. What would you like drastic to call the self proclaimed "christians"???? I have been judged for being "non-christian" so therefore I will judge, along with drastic, the so called christians!!!!!! I have some great friends that follow the word of there god to a tee and I applaud them for it because they believe what they follow but I do not applaud the so called christians that get drunk, high, or abuse there family and then praise their god.

  31. To Fool, does your bible say we should embrace the medical conditions requiring treatment? Are those a blessing from your God? I don't think you are going to sell that here or in any respectable religious organization. Yes the body is a temple but cancer is real, painful and treatable. I can only hope that when your temple starts to crumble you will find solace in your God and not have to turn to medicine, whether purchased in a pharmacy or grown in your own back yard.

This is a waste of tax payers money, an outdated law, and should be recognized as such.

  32. Most of us who have a card are actually living with dreadfully painful conditions. Those few who seem to feel that having a card makes it ok to now go out and "get high legally" are misusing what this campaign is all about. My mother died in pain, unwilling to eat, etc. I will not! I support the true MM.

  33. Why can't the healing properties in cannabis be synthesized into pill form and sold behind the counter at the local drug store? This way doctors could prescribe it like any other medication, and it would allow it to be more carefully monitored. Or are the medical properties in cannabis only accessible when baked into brownies?

  34. Jay makes a valid point. I wouldn't mind hearing a good logical explaination on why it couldn't be put into pill form.

  35. Lof of angry people around here.
Does pot help with that or create it?

    This law really is silly.
I'm sure it's on it's way out pretty soon.
Be interesting to see if the 'tude goes with it....

  36. to jay. no the medical properties in cannabis can be accessible in alot of things medicine has came along way from years ago. if it was sold in a drug store, i would be it would not be pure like people grow for they own use. look at the food you eat and food you grow in the garden which do you want to eat to be healthy?????

  37. There have been cannabis pills available by prescription for years. My brother had them 10 years ago with cancer. As to the pain of illness, neither cannabis or the pill form will help with that. It is simply to help increase the appetite. The real issue here is whether or not this plant should be legal to grow and consume and if it is the best use of our tax dollars to regulate it. We don't limit the amount of alcohol people can buy or consume, nor tobacco, so when is the stigma going to be taken off this plant. I dare say many more people use alcohol and tobacco than use weed, so lets up-date the laws to match the times.

  38. To the fool - Let's see what your Christian body takes during serious and painful illness. Then you can preach.

  39. Respectfully Sir,,I agree with your points comparing weed to other legal "consumer products",,,I honestly dont know anybody who disputes the points you make,,ie:weed isn't any worse then these other things.
But why are you guys railing against what the fool said? It's just another option that many people have worked for them (and that is a fact).
You guys rants at him are exactly yhe same mentality th

  40. Respectfully Sir,,I agree with your points comparing weed to other legal "consumer products",,,I honestly dont know any reasonable people who dispute the points you make,,ie:weed isn't any worse then these other things. No brainer.

But why are you guys railing against what the "fool" said? It's just another option that many people say have worked for them (and that is a fact). I guess you just dont like it that he said it,,he didn't judge anybody in what he wrote but you still find a way to be all "offended" and feel the need to mock the point now.
You guys rants at him look "exactly the same intolerant mentality" that the hypocrites you hate so bad use when they label all weed users as dumb stoned losers....(rowing the same boat).
Maybe you guys are the ones giving legitimate weed use a bad name,,just like the hypocrites do.
Calm down boys, no one is forcing you to do anything.

To the folks in pain who find relief in this,,I hope the state does the right thing and eases the burden on you by making it easier to get help.
Lets hope (and yes pray) for that soon.

  41. A brief quiz for both the sincere and/or hypocritical among us:

    1. Who created marijuana? ______
    2. Who made it illegal? ______

answers: a) God b) people...use each answer only once.

  42. This conversation is off track! Bottom line, is what Gould did illegal, not immoral, and is it a good use of the taxpayers money to prosecute. I say, stop violent crime and crimes against property and leave the poor guy alone.
