Update: Chesterville teenager dies after swimming accident

Update: The teenager, identified as Jeffrey R. Pepin II, 17, of Chesterville, died on Thursday, July 2 at Maine Medical in Portland after being Life-flighted from Maine General in Augusta, following the swimming accident, according to his obituary.

ROME – A Chesterville teen is in critical condition this afternoon as a result of a swimming incident on Great Pond.

According to Maine Warden Service Cpl. John MacDonald, the male teenager was swimming with two other teens near Crooked Island and went below the surface. After being recovered by his friends, a nearby off-duty nurse was alerted to the incident and performed lifesaving measures. The male was transported by Delta Ambulance to Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

The three males had been boating and moored near Crooked Island. All three attempted to swim from the moored boat back to Crooked Island when the incident took place. One of the teens was wearing a life jacket.

Maine State Police and Belgrade Fire & Rescue assisted. This incident remains under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.
