SANDY RIVER PLANTATION – A couple was injured after the motorcycle they were riding went off the road on Route 4 Sunday evening.

According to Sheriff Scott Nichols, James Turcotte, 58, of Clinton, was operating a 1981 Suzuki motorcycle and accompanying him on the bike was his wife, Rebecca Turcotte, 53.

The motorcycle was traveling in the S-turns on Route 4 and it “drifted off the road,” Nichols said, near the Appalachian Trail crossing. “Speed was not a factor,” he added.

Emergency crews were called at 6:25 p.m.

Both were wearing helmets. James Turcotte apparently suffered internal injuries and was transported by NorthStar EMS ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital, as was Rebecca Turcotte. Both were transferred to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

A CMMC spokeswoman said James Turcotte was listed in fair condition and Rebecca Turcotte was in good condition Monday afternoon.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Hartley is investigating the crash. Rangeley Fire Department personnel assisted at the scene.
