Franklin County Sheriff’s Office weekly report for Sept. 11 – 25, 2015:
Deputies responded to 225 calls for service during this time period

9/11/2015 Deputy Nicholas Zecher responded to an alarm at Mt. Abram Health Center at 25 Depot Street in Kingfield.

9/11/2015 Cpl. Nate Bean assisted Rangeley police with a complaint in Rangeley.

9/11/2015 Deputy Matt Brann investigated an ATV accident in Strong where the driver sustained minor injuries.

9/11/2015 Lt. David Rackliffe conducted a traffic stop on Church Street in Carthage, as a result of the stop Patrick Friel, 55, of Rangeley was arrested on a charge of operating under the influence.

9/12/2015 Cpl. Bean responded to a motorcycle accident on Route 27 in Eustis where the driver was injured and transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital.

9/12/2015 Deputy Zecher assisted Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office with a child custody investigation that started in Kingfield.

9/12/2015 Deputy Brann and Cpl. Bean responded to Phillips for a report of an unattended vehicle abandoned at the High Street and Rangeley Road intersection. Upon arrival it was determined that the driver was still in the vehicle but had shut its lights off. After talking with the driver deputies determined that the driver was in crises and asked if he was willing to go to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. The driver agreed to go.

9/12/2015 Deputy Colt Bernhardt investigated a report of a vehicle off the road on Norton Hill Road in Strong. As a result of the investigation, Ellis Burke of Strong was arrested on charges of operating under the influence and violating conditions of release.

9/12/2015 Deputy Andrew Morgan responded to Beech Street in Stratton regarding a suspicious vehicle.

9/13/2015 Cpl. Bean responded to a 911 hang up complaint on the Carthage Road in Carthage, it was determined a toddler was pushing buttons on the phone.

9/13/2015 Deputy Morgan, Lt. David St. Laurent, Deputy Kevin Hartley and Deputy Zecher investigated an unattended death on Butterfield Road in Industry. The subject had been deceased for over a week, the case was turned over to the State Police major crimes unit. It was later determined to be a chainsaw accident.

9/13/2015 Sheriff Scott Nichols and Deputy Brann responded to York Hill Road in New Sharon for a report of an out-of-control juvenile.

9/13/2015 Cpl. Bean was assisted by Trooper Jed Malcore with a disturbance complaint on Montfort Drive in Strong.

9/15/2015 Deputy Bernhardt responded to a single vehicle accident at the bottom of Mile Hill Road in New Sharon. No injuries were reported.

9/15/2015 Deputy Brann investigated a report of fraud on the Swan Road in New Sharon.

9/15/2015 Deputy Brann investigated a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at the boat launch in New Sharon.

9/16/2015 Cpl. Bean responded to a property damage accident only on Carthage Road in Carthage.

9/16/2015 Detective Ken Charles assisted Farmington police with an investigation.

9/16/2015 Deputy Brann and Cpl. Bean responded to Mile Hill Road in New Sharon for a report of a domestic disturbance. It was determined to be verbal only and no charges were filed.

9/16/2015 Deputy Zecher responded to the Fredericks Road in Strong regarding a report of a vehicle speeding and “laying rubber” on the street. Zecher contacted the involved persons and had a discussion with them.

9/18/2015 7:19 pm Deputy Hartley and Deputy Morgan investigated a motor vehicle crash on Route 2 in New Sharon near the Davis Farm. Penobscot Warden Service Warden Troy Francis suffered a medical issue which caused him to lose control of his warden truck and run off the road and roll over striking trees. The warden suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital to be evaluated and was subsequently released. New Sharon Fire Dept. assisted at the scene.

9/19/2015 at 11 pm Deputy Morgan responded to West Side Drive in Carthage regarding a report of an underage drinking party. Upon Morgan’s arrival he discovered eight minors who were at the residence of Zachary Demars, 19. Demars was arrested on charges of violating conditions of release, Class E; furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol, Class D; and charged with minor in possession of alcohol (infraction) and possession of marijuana (infraction). A juvenile who also lives at the residence was charged with furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol and was also charged with the following infractions: minor possessing liquor and marijuana.

9/19/2015 Deputy Hartley and Deputy Sandy Burke responded to the Pit Road in Carthage regarding an ongoing trespassing compliant.

9/19/2015 Deputy Hartley responded to West Mills Road in Industry regarding a complaint of ATVs kicking up debris in the road.

9/19/2015 Deputy Brann investigated a report of a break-in at the library in New Sharon. Unknown individual(s) broke into the cellar of the building.

9/20/2015 Deputy Burke investigated a late report of a domestic disturbance that was reported to the Sheriff’s Office by an officer from Old Orchard Beach Police Department. The couple, both from Berlin, N.H. apparently had some sort of physical disturbance while at their camp. urther investigation is being conducted by Burke however it appears that the actual location may be in Oxford County.

9/21/2015 Deputy Burke found an elderly couple hitchhiking on the Wilton Road in Farmington. They said to Burke that they had been kicked out of their house in New Portland. Since it was late in the day they were put up at a local motel for the evening. Deputy Burke contacted Trooper Reid Bond who investigated their claim that they were kicked out of relatives’ house in New Portland. Adult protective services is involved with the case.

9/21/2015 Deputy Morgan stopped a car in Kingfield for a traffic violation, as a result of the stop, Adam Rayworth, 37, of Boylston, Mass., was arrested on a charge of operating under the influence.

9/22/2015 Deputy Hartley investigated an accident involving a Farmington police cruiser at Farmington Police Department. No injuries were reported.

9/22/2015 Deputy Morgan investigated an animal complaint on Park Street in Phillips where the complainant claimed that he was attacked by his neighbor’s three dogs.

9/22/2015 Deputy Morgan investigated a report of criminal mischief at the Reeds Mill Road in Phillips.

9/23/2015 Deputy Hartley responded to the Eustis Fire Department regarding a report of a suspicious male at 3 a.m. near the main entrance. A Border Patrol Agent was nearby and identified the local male who lived in Cranberry Apartments in Stratton. He was intoxicated.

9/23/2015 Detective Ken Charles received information from a Detective Crowley of the Massachusetts State Police (in Bristol County) that a Chesterville resident named Mark Bennoch, 53, who lives on the West Road, had a fugitive from justice warrant issued for his arrest from the State of Massachusetts on a charge of rape of child.  Detective Stephen Charles accompanied Ken Charles to make the arrest. Crowley was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center and is currently being held pending extradition. 

9/24/15 Lt. St. Laurent arrested Richard Chabot, 47, of Strong on a Class A charge of gross sexual assault against a juvenile. The arrest came after the conclusion of an investigation that began on Aug. 24.  As a result of interviews conducted through witnesses and the investigation, Lt. St. Laurent arrested Chabot where he is being held at the Franklin County Detention Center on $20,000 cash bail.

9/24/2015 Cpl. Bean investigated a report of juveniles from the Salem/Kingfield area who had vandalized a fair ride in Farmington.

9/25/2015 Deputy Zecher arrested Patrick Catherwood, 35, of Jay on two warrants after Catherwood turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Office.

9/25/2015 Deputy Hartley responded to a car vs. moose accident on Walden Flats in Rangeley Plt. The moose died at the scene and caused reported damage to the tractor trailer that hit it.

Deputies conducted 36 building checks during this time period and found all secure. Deputies also conducted 4 elder checks.

  1. Keep up the good work that you all do. Deputy Burke that was wonderful that you had stop to help the elderly couple and that Adult Protective Services in involed. Hopefully , they will get the help that they need. Thank You to the Sheriff Dep, Farmington PD and all the others local PD’S for putting your lives on the line to protect your neighbor’s and your community’s . Your lives Matter.💙💙💙
