Industry woman attacked by dogs, injured

1 min read

INDUSTRY – A woman was injured after two dogs attacked and bit her legs Tuesday morning.

Susan Grant, 67, was walking along Times Square Road when she was attacked by a German shepherd and a black lab mix dog.

“The dogs came out and were aggressive towards her,” said Deputy Matt Brann of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. Grant suffered a bite wound on each leg from from both dogs before she managed to run into a friend’s house and call for help.

Brann, Industry Fire Department and NorthStar EMS ambulance personnel responded to the call at 10:09 a.m.

Grant was treated at the scene by first responders. An EMT said she may need one of the wounds to be sutured. She said she intended to seek medical attention on her own, Brann said.

Also responding was Industry animal control officer, Lee Ireland, who found one of the dogs was up-to-date on its rabies vaccination, but the other’s certification had expired a year ago, Brann said. Ireland, working in cooperation with the dogs’ owners, Richard and Stacy Austin, arranged for one dog to be quarantined for the required 48 hours to make sure it’s not a rabies carrier.

Grant requested that there be no charges filed against the owners of the dogs.

  1. Being quarantine is understandable, but why were these K-9s loose outside with no restraint? I understand the victim asked that no charges be assessed, but I assume there is an ordinance in Industry regarding dogs being tied up?

  2. This is absolutely awful, and if I were the woman who was attacked, I’d be pressing charges. People with dogs seem to have no respect for other people when it comes to being around dogs. I was attacked by a dog at age four and have been chased down by a few in my lifetime. Therefore, I don’t like being around dogs and my family that has them know dogs are not welcomed in my home. I don’t care whose dog it is or if you tell me it’s good, you won’t convince me to like it or feel safe around it. Just because you like dogs, does not mean other people do. Many years ago, I walked into a hardware store and the owner let it’s dog run free. That dog came up to me and starting biting at my hand and licking my ankles. Never again did I step foot in that hardware store.

  3. State law mandates that dogs have to be under the owners control but these were not. Susan is a dog lover and if both are well, she will not require rabies shots herself. Hope the Richard and Stacy have learned a valuable lesson. For Sue, get some 10% pepper spray and carry it on your walks, should not have to, but better to be safe. Sue is the wife of the man who saved the boaters early in the Spring on Clearwater. Nice folks.

  4. I feel so bad for you Susan, I got bitten by a dog also and had stitches and on antibiotics fro nearly 3 weeks… I wish you a speedy recovery.. Dog bites are very serious, people do not realize this and what pain we go through and the hell we feel trying to get our extremities back to where they were so we can use them normally again.

  5. Just another reason that I carry a pistol everywhere I go. If I had been walking with Ms. Grant, the Bulldog would reporting about two dead dogs and how I saved the day….thank God for the 2nd Amendment..

  6. Boy, do I feel saver knowing HiPPIE is carrying a gun. Every one will sleep better I am sure!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. wow that’s to bad I hope the owners get the hospital bills not this poor lady so sorry for this lady

  8. Simple and safe solution. An invisible fence folks. Very effective with the dogs being able to roam happily within safe boundaries. Win win from both sides of the fence. Sorry Sue having to deal with dog bites. Not fun, I was bit a few years ago when a dog ran out of his yard to the other side of the road and bit my leg. Permanent scar and still very sensitive. Heal well and soon!!!!

  9. I thought if a dog attacked, bite unprovoked, they had to be put down? Those dogs are dangerous and their owners should be held responsible or prosecuted. If it were me (and my kids), they would be facing a law suit.

    Speedy recovery Sue.

  10. This sounds like one of those avoidable situations that wasn’t looked into enough before the bad stuff happened. I hope the owners of the dogs have looked into why and how the dogs were running loose and hopefully remedied that problem. They dodged
a bullet on this one, they might not be so lucky if the dogs get out again. I’m sure they love their dogs as most of us do. They just need to do more to contain them so other people are safe. To the lady who was injured ….You must have been so scared. I hope you heal quickly.

  11. I’m with Hippie on this one 100%. Inexcusable offense. And Rob S – well said, Sir.

  12. Quick to go for the lawsuit huh?! Lovely comment and just as lovely of a person I’m sure!
Sounds like Sue is trying to be a good and understanding neighbor and I’m sure the owners feel terrible (I had a dog break through a window once and we dont know why or how these dogs were out). If they were my dogs I would have them destroyed after quarantine no question but for her to be so nice about this speaks volumes of the type of person she is! Wishing you a quick recovery Sue.

  13. I wonder how the comments may have been different if this were a pit bull, and a rottweiller? I assume most people would be ready to make sure those dogs were put down, not just put into quarantine to ensure there is no risk of rabies.

  14. I’m just glad no dog was shot. No one was seriously injured. Although I too know how painful dog bites can be as a child I was attacked by a boxer and ended up with stiches in my chest , and a speedy recovery goes out to Mrs. Grant. Glad to hear that people for once can be civil about something that could have gone very wrong. Best of luck with both parties involved. And I too carry a gun and GOD had nothing to do with that. It was OUR constitution.

  15. Charges? Lawsuits?? Pistols???? Good grief! Thanks, Sue, for handling this with civility and grace.

  16. I can see it now,,
Hippie misses and wounds One of the animals.
Does it bow down to his righteousness?
    Probably not,,
The wounded animal and it’s NOT wounded buddy defend themselves by tearing off the flailing arm holding the gun and proceed to teach the hippie a lesson about unintended consequences.
    BRAVO,,,BRAVO..
    WHACKO..

Sounds like this whole situation is being handled very well by everyone that is actually involved.

  17. This is unfortunate but not suprising to me as an Industry resident. There are many instances of dogs at large, in this town, that are never taken seriously..that is..until some poor person is injured. Hopefully this is a wake up call to dog owners, especially to those who have dogs who may go after people or other pets.

  18. I am NOT a dog lover.. Never have been since I was attacked and bitten multipal times.2 surgeries and 1 year to get my arm and hand to JUST FUNCTION… Come on dog owners.. Be responsible..

  19. Sue seems a kind forgiving, decent sort. Apparently these traits are not contagious on this site. No matter the issue, every story attracts the same nameless internet “tough guys” who tell us who they would shoot ,be it human or critter and what their weapon of choice would be for the occasion. Please spare us this nameless nincompoopery . You don’t represent who we are.

  20. This isn’t the first time in recent years this has happened in our town-maybe the town officials should work with law officers and summons people for loose dogs-why should they get off scott free which they usually do-as a pet owner I realize accidents can happen but these animals are doing personal injury not like the loose horse or cow that is a nuisance-

  21. Evidently the Windbag hasn’t seen me shoot. Evidently he has an issue of the way I protect my family. Well, my friend, if we are ever in that situation together, I will happily protect you too. During two tours in Iraq, I learned take good of my fellow brothers, and I shoot pretty straight.

  22. Don’t be so quick to judge without having the facts. A few years ago I decided to take a shower while my step-daughter was taking a nap. She woke up earlier than expected and decided to go outside to play, letting my dogs out in the process. A couple years before that I caught a dog that was running down the road and called the number on the dog tag. Come to find out, the dog got loose when someone broke into the woman’s home.

Sue, hope you have a speedy recovery and thank you for not leading the lynch mob.

  23. Hey Hippie: I suggest that you reread the 2nd amendment, no where does it specify that you have the right to shoot somebody’s dogs. It guarantees your right to have a gun that’s all. Maybe you should think before you shoot. This lady has decided to think before she sues or causes more distress for the dogs owners. She has been very kind and forgiving and she should be commended for her kindness. Bless her.

  24. A guy sees a man and a dog on the side of the road. The guy asks the man, “Does your dog bite”. The man says, “No” The guy reaches down to pat the dog and the dog growls and bites the mans hand. The guy says, “You said your dog doesn’t bite!” the man says, “That ain’t my dog!”

  25. First, Susan has provided a great example of civility and class.

Second, why does this become a platform for a pro gun rights person to waive the 2nd amendment around to justify reckless words? the reason non gun people are against guns is because they always hear the zealots who make responsible gun owners look bad. The NRA argues that guns are a right because of the 2nd amendment. Everyone who argues this in court points out that the idea of the 2nd amendment was to prevent a tyrannical government from subjugating the people. I am not a gun guy but I know plenty of responsible gun owners. I can’t refute the wording and intent of the 2nd amendment. So, by Hippie;s logic packs of dogs are banding together to take over the land.

Hippie, I thank you for your service in the military. Everyone appreciates you for this. In a war zone, rules of engagement are different and I understand the kill or be killed bravado and transitions from that type of environment can be a challenge. Just remember the purpose of the 2nd amendment before you invoke it as a reason for ridiculous bravado. Remember that rights come with responsibilities. You have every right to bear arms but you also have to be a responsible citizen and your tone will make people think you are shell shocked and just looking for conflict. As a well trained soldier, I am sure you are better than this.

Again, thank you for your service to the country. We all owe you a debt of gratitude.

  26. My dogs have escaped a time or two (kids left door ajar, etc). While they would never attack anyone, I would have to assume full responsibility for any problems created. While I would hope no one would shoot my springer and my lab, I would understand if they were fearful and it was my responsibility to contain my animals.

Its nice to have this forum to comment, but man do people get mean spirited in here at times.

I would like to think neighborly and common sense would rule in most circumstances, as every situation is different and some thought should go into responses.

  27. Real men also respect their neighbors, in part by keeping their dogs under control AND reasonably quiet so that everyone can live in peace!!
