WILTON – A Jay man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Routes 2 & 4 Monday night.

According to Wilton police Officer Brian Lynch, Michael Whittemore, 27, of Jay, was traveling south towards Jay driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup and “failed to yield to the Route 2 traffic traveling east.”

Sarah Hackett, 34, of East Dixfield, traveling east on Route 2, driving a 2010 Jeep Wrangler, struck the front end of Whittemore’s pickup and “rolled several times,” Lynch said.

Emergency crews were called at 6:35 p.m. Monday.

Whittemore was transported by NorthStar Ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital and then transported by a LifeFlight medical helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with injuries described by Lynch as “serious, but non-life threatening.”

Wilton Fire Department, Jay Police Department, Jay Fire Department and East Dixfield Fire Department assisted at the scene. Lynch said the crash investigation remains under investigation.

  4. Blaine,
LUCY is RIGHT. I came upon the accident, every engine and truck that Jay and Wilton FD and PD had available and three ambulances were on site. Curious why the papers didn’t report it on Tuesday?

  5. it did happen on Monday about 6:30 pm and I was there too trying to open the roof of the jeep because it was smoking inside and we needed to air it out so she could breath better.

  6. The sun glare was horrible that day. I wonder if that could have been part of it. I came through just after the accident. And I almost hit a pedestrian on 156 before that due to the glare.

  7. Why doesn’t the Daily Bulldog post follow-ups to articles like these, stating that the man isn’t dead and has been since released from the hospital?

  8. Thomas- A huge thank you from my family and I as we will forever be grateful for what you and your wife did to help me that evening. This experience has changed me in many ways as I have never come so close to death before in my life. It has taught me how fast the things we take for granted everyday can be taken away in the blink of an eye. I don’t sweat the small stuff, I walk by messes left around the house and most importantly I hold my loved ones a little closer every time I can. Also a huge thank you to all the first responders that helped out, you all hold a special place within my heard.. Go A Team
