Missing checks leads to investigation, arrest in Phillips

PHILLIPS – A local man was arrested on felony theft charges Tuesday after a 94-year-old resident noticed that two checks were missing.

Brent Adams, 41 of Phillips, was arrested on two counts of theft and two counts of forgery, all Class C felonies, after he was interviewed by Franklin County Sheriff’s Office personnel.

According to Sheriff Scott Nichols, Deputy Colt Bernhardt responded to a Pleasant Street residence in Phillips Tuesday after the resident said that they had found a discrepancy in their checkbook and noticed two missing checks. Further investigation determined that the checks had been written out to Adams, Nichols said.

“It was determined that not only had the checks been stolen but the complainant’s name and signature had been forged,” Nichols said in a written statement Thursday.

Adams was located and questioned. He admitted the theft and forgery of the checks, Nichols said, telling the investigator that he had a drug addiction.

Adams was arrested and transported to Franklin County Detention Center.

  1. Everyone has an problem to justify taking other peoples stuff. Don’t care and don’t want to hear it, grow up and have some respect….

  2. I agree with Greg! He needs to get help, not steal from an elderly person that probably only gets a small pension. How stupid can u get? If u admit u have a drug problem then go get dried out!

  3. This guy’s always in trouble. Sounds like a great candidate for permanent residency at your fully functioning facility.

  4. 4 class C felonies. Max 4 years lock up and 4000 dollar fine. If I was the judge I’d waive the fine and give him the full ride.

  5. actually $5000 and up to 5 years on each count,…enough time to clean him up and make the world a better place.
